Mr. Hemn Sleman Ali's Thesis Defense

Mr. Sleman Ali defended his thesis on 24 June 2017

Mr. Hemn Sleman Ali, our international student in the food safety and hygiene program (M.Sc. level), defended his thesis on 24 June 2017.

The title of his thesis is "prevalence of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Entamoeba parasite in common raw vegetables from markets and farms of Koya city, Kurdistan region-Iraq".

This study aimed to determine and compare the contamination rate of commonly consumed raw green vegetables among markets and farms during spring and summer seasons by the parasitic protozoan parasites (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Entamoeba).

According to the results of this study, the prevalence of protozoa contamination was high in Koya city. The Entamoeba cyst was the most prevalent contaminant protozoa of raw vegetables and celery was the most contaminated vegetable. Seasonal variations and types of vegetable had no significant effect on contamination by protozoa. Vegetables collected from farms were highly contaminated than vegetables collected from markets. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a holistic approach in sustainable program to address this issue and present recommendations to overcome the causes of intestinal parasitic infections and remedy the problem completely

Dr.Jahed Khaniki was the supervisor, and Dr. Yunesian, Dr. Shariatifar, and Dr. Rezaeian were the advisors of this thesis. Hemn successfully defended his thesis and got an excellent mark for his defense.

We congratulate Mr. Ali on his graduation and wish him the best.
