About the Department

In 2008 this department was establishe. It is in cooperation with dental school and was headed by Dr shamsolmolouk najafi. The Department of Oral Medicine had the main role in leading patient care, teaching and research.
All the members are specialists in oral medicine and were graduated from Iran’s dental schools. The ORAL MEDICINE specialists are involved in diagnosis and nonsurgical management of diseases of the orofacial complex and systemic and behavioral disorders that impact oral health, including:
• Orofacial pain
• Mucosal Pigmented and Red & White lesions
• Neurosensory and motor disorders
• Xerostomia and salivary gland disorders.
• Systemic disease with oral manifestation and their Dental management
• Temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
• Oral cancer and complications of cancer therapy
• Vesiculobullouse disease with oral involvement

Department Profile

The department is the 2nd branch of Oral Medicine department of TUMS.
The head of the department is Dr Arghavan Tonkaboni ;DDS, MSc. And she supervised researches in the department too
The Oral Medicine department’s members deliver lectures and clinical supervision for undergraduate students.
The classes are held from 7:30 to 14 and Clinics are held from 09:00am – 13:00pm Saturday to Wednesday


Department’s Mission & Vision Statement


Our mission is to train dentists who are expert in diagnosis and management ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL diseases and lesions. The graduates should be highly trained in early diagnosis and referrals in patients with oral and maxillofacial tumors and multidisciplinary dental treatment especially in complex systemic diseases.



Our vision involves three areas:

  1. Health care services in the field of oral and maxillofacial medicine
  2. Education for undergraduate
  3. intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary  research


Admission & Academic Calendar


The school year at the School of Dentistry consists of two semesters: Fall and spring.

The beginning of Summer Vacation is commonly on 6th August.

The beginning of Admission Period for Spring Semester 2013-2014 is from August 2013. The graduate candidates may enroll for the spring semester.

The spring semester starts from the mid February after the two-week-vacation in winter. At the beginning the Dean welcomes the new students and then the students go through a tour of the Campus. At the end of the first day they receive a tutorial session on course registration for new students. The Spring- Semester Vacation is a two-week national holiday starting on 20th of March. Beginning of Mid-term Examinations, Registration for Fall  Semester, Final Examinations Period are flexible for graduate students and will be announced by vice dean for graduate studies

Requirements for admission to the Oral Medicine department are as follows:

Having a degree of DDS from an approved institute

English language certificate It is better for you to be familiar with the Persian language

Examinations and awards


During the course students are evaluated by their seminars, internal quizzes and final exam. The graduate degree ends with a thesis defense.
