PhD Studentship in Prosthetics and Orthotics:

Project title:
 
Utilization of biomechanical and mathematical modeling in the study of efficiency and energetic of gait and mobility in aging
 
Three years studentship:
 
Tuition fees and an annual maintenance allowance at current TUMS research rate.

Project Description: This exciting project will drive the biomechanical and mathematical modeling of various trajectories of change in primary physiological parameters across the age spectrum.
 
   
The underlying goals are to identify changes due to “normal aging” versus changes caused by age-related diseases and to identify key factors that impact the aging process. A primary interest includes the interplay between body composition and mobility; included in this is the investigation of age-associated changes in muscle architecture and quality, and connective tissue material properties. Towards this, one current goal is integration of an existing database of high resolution CT and MRI imaging data into biomechanical and mathematical models of the lower extremities. The Rehabilitation Research Center (CRC), School of Rehabilitation has a dedicated state-of-the-art laboratory space equipped with a walkway, 2 imbedded force platforms (Bertec's Forceplate),
 
 
Vicon 3D motion capture system, 6 cameras (Oxford Matrics Ltd), and visual 3D motion capture system analysis and modeling software.
 
The laboratory has a fully dedicated technician who administers study protocols to participants, coordinates the laboratory and assists with data pre-processing.
 
Application criteria:
 
Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least an MSc degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics or equivalent, in Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering in & Bioengineering with:
 1) A background in biomechanics, biomedical engineering, kinesiology, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, orthopedics, neuroscience, or other closely related disciplines
2) Experience with motion analysis and construction of biomechanical and mathematical models and 3) demonstrated experience writing scientific papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Experience using Visual 3D motion analysis and modeling software and programming in MATLAB is desired. The TUMS provides a unique opportunity with extensive longitudinal interactive environment for biomedical research training with considerable expertise in medicine, statistics, and epidemiology with basic and clinical scientists spanning a wide range of research specialties in rehabilitation and aging related research.
