The glaucoma fellowship of the Farabi Eye Hospital and Tehran University of Medical Sciences has been established since 1995, and it is aimed to provide comprehensive training in the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of both routine glaucoma patients as well as complicated glaucoma cases commonly referred to tertiary centers such as ours. As a result, it has been successful in educating efficient glaucoma specialists who are serving as capable clinicians as well as excellent academic staff around the country and worldwide.

Educational Objectives
The fellow will gain ability in the diagnosis of different types of glaucoma in children and adults. Additionally, he/she will be able to perform surgical, medical, and laser treatment of glaucoma patients and their complications.
Clinical fellows are strongly encouraged to pursue original research and are provided time to do so. Research can be clinical or basic science in nature, depending upon the qualifications and interest of the fellows. As a researcher, the fellow will be able to critically review clinical and research articles, and successfully carry out a research project that can be presented at national or international meetings and published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Supervision and teaching of residents and medical students in the glaucoma Service and in the Emergency Department

Attendance and presentation at meetings such as: Iranian Society of Ophthalmology Annual Congress, and Farabi Hospital Annual Meeting.
As the main referral center of glaucoma in Iran, we have more than 200 patients each day. During the 3 month period, he will be in clinic 2 days per week visiting new cases of primary or secondary glaucoma, postop and follow/up patients.
He/she will be in operating rooms 2 days per week observe or helping attendings for glaucoma procedures. Vast variety of procedures are done in the OR, including trabeculectomy, phacotrabeculectomy, and shunting procedures. Modern surgeries like trabectome, endocyclophotocoagulation, deep sclerectomy and canaloplasty are also performed.

Clinical Facilities
The Glaucoma Service is located in Farabi Eye Hospital. The current facility is fully equipped with therapeutic and diagnostic equipments. Spectral domain RNFL and ONH OCT, Anterior Segment OCT, UBM, and HRT are used routinely.
A fully equipped Laser Clinic equipped with YAG and Argon laser devices is active.
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Surgical Glaucoma
The preoperative (including active role in treatment planning), intraoperative and postoperative management of patients are among responsibilities of the fellow. The fellow will participate in glaucoma surgery and laser procedures, including trabeculectomy, shunting procedures, non-penetrating glaucoma surgeries, trabeculotomy and goniotomy, endocyclophotocoagulation and phacoemulsification of difficult and challenging cases. In addition, surgical training provides experience in the management of complications of previous procedures such as malignant glaucoma, choroidal drainage, … . The fellow will also assist in, or sometimes supervise surgeries performed by a resident.
2. Medical Glaucoma
There is a weekly glaucoma text review conference and journal club in which selected recent publications concerning medical or surgical glaucoma topics are presented by the residents or the fellows and critically appraised by the faculty and the fellows. The retina fellows are also expected to actively attend and have periodic presentations in weekly Farabi Eye Hospital conference. The fellows may contribute in teaching and evaluating the residents. Fellows will take part in visiting and managing patients in glaucoma consulting clinic as well as in glaucoma follow-up clinics.
3. On Call Schedule
The most engaged ophthalmic emergency department in Iran, is located on Farabi Eye Hospital. The graduates of the hospital are known nationally for their skills and expertise in managing trauma patients. The fellow will be involved in the management of the patients in the Emergency Department including anterior segment trauma patients, either as treating or supervising physician.
Research Responsibilities
The fellows have opportunities to participate in research projects in Farabi Hospital Eye Research Center. In particular, fellows are expected to perform and accomplish at least one research project under the mentorship of the faculty during the course of the fellowship.
