Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : 32nd conference of the international society for fluoride research
Title of your Abstract : estimation of fluoride intake by Iranian powdered milk-fed infants
country : Chiang Mai, Thailand
From : Tuesday, November 25, 2014
To : Friday, November 28, 2014
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : SUMMARY: Fluoride (F) intakes by formula-fed infants are highly variable, depending primarily on the F content of the water used to dilute concentrated liquid or powdered infant formula products. According to F content in drinking water measured in different areas of Iran and F content in highly-consumed powdered milk, F intake by Iranian powdered milk-fed infant was estimated. Results showed that for the Iranian infant population generally, many infants in some regions were exposed to higher F intakes from powdered milk than other regions with less F content in drinking water. Based on obtained results, only in Bushehr province, the provincial mean F level in the groundwater resources was higher than the WHO guideline value of 1.5 mg/L (1.86 ± 0.86 mg/L), so the mean F intake by powdered milk-fed infants who are fed with powdered milk in this province is 40-50 mg/kg/day. F intake by powdered milk-fed infants in different areas in Iran ranged from 20-40 mg/kg/day which were less than EPA’s reference dose (RfD) 60 mg per kg body weight per day.

Keywords of your Abstract : Fluoride intake by Infant; Iran; Powdered milk; powdered milk-fed infants; Reference Dose (RfD).

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : More than 150
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : There were delegates and speakers from Many countries around the world like: United states of America, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, India, China, Thailand, Tanzania, Singapore, and Ethiopia…
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : - Department of Health, Ministry of public Health • Bureau of dental health • Bureau of international cooperation • Intercountry center for oral health
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : Our research presentation was oral and some of the participants had questions the research. For example; one of them asked me that “why you didn’t use permissible level of fluoride in powdered milk determined by Iranian standards and you used WHO and international standards in this research?” the our answer was: “we wanted to present this paper in international conference and since other countries people aren’t familiar with Iranian standards in this field, we preferred to use the international standards in our article in an international conference. Also in some cases there aren’t any standards in Iran for fluoride permissible levels.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : Dr. Bruce Spittle, Editor-in-Chief of fluoride from New Zealand.
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : Since this conference is held every two years and there are many health problems due to amount of fluoride in some regions of our country, I think holding this conference in Iran would help to solve this kind of problems. There will be a chance to use opinion and proposals of experts from all over the world to decrease the fluoride problems. (Of course last year this conference held in Tehran, but we hope this happen again and again…)
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : It was routine for me as I go to this conference every two years. But in this conference, we were taken to some villages in order to get familiar with health problems due to fluoride in people who were exposed to these problems, directly.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : In 32nd conference of the international society for fluoride, I met many experts in fluoride field and went to many sessions such as:
Platform session I: Biological effects of fluoride
Platform session II: Epidemiology of Flurorosis
Platform Session III: Fluorosis prevention
Platform Session IV: Defluroridator
Platform Session V: Mitigation
The participants could talk and discuss with each other.
We discussed to have collaboration in some field of researches related to fluoride problems in drinking water and training in the future. In this conference, we were taken to some villages in order to get familiar with health problems due to fluoride in people who were exposed to these problems, directly.
