Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Background Emergency department(ED) is the heart of hospital and when it operates in an orderly manner it can save many lives. Therefore, quality improvement of its functions including communication with the patient /companions is crucial for creating patient satisfaction and safety.
Methodology A qualitative study was conducted by using participatory action research based on action research cycle (Kemmis, 1995) at one of the largest hospitals in Iran. Three groups of participants were involved in this study: 1. the initial participants (17 semi-structured interviews with eleven nurses and emergency). 2. Key Participants: action research Committee (consisting of nine nursing and medical managers, and academic researchers). 3. Dependent participants in order to get feedback (including six emergency physicians and nurses and four patients/companions).
Patients' satisfaction with communication in ED is also considered. This study was conducted during two cycles of action research, three formal meetings every 6 months and numerous individual meetings with key Participants.
Results The actions included establishment of "effective communication" workshop for emergency nurses - sending SMS messages about "characteristics of effective communication with the patient /companions" through hospital automation system - and adding a section about "Communication Skills in ED" to hand outs given to medical student. Findings diary was positive in this area. Patient satisfaction with emergency nurses’ behaviour (29.25%) and emergency physicians (33.6%), were respectively (51%) and (48.7%).
Conclusions The result showed that forming a multidisciplinary team, without imposing high costs, improves communication with the patient /companions and provides safer conditions in the ED.
