Abstract
Objective: To compare two educational methods for applying Varnish Fluoride (VF) by non-dental professional health-workers on 7-8-year-old children in a school setting.
Method: The present educational intervention study compared the practice of Varnish Fluoride Therapy (VFT) between two groups of health-workers received two types of training; one with a "multimedia" only, and the second with a "multimedia plus" a question and answer session. Based on the results of the pilot study, number of practitioners in each group (n=25) determined, and Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) questionnaire developed and finalized. Each health-worker applied VF for four 7-8-year-old children sitting on a chair, using a plastic mirror, gauze, cotton roll, plastic forceps, and single-dose SultanTM varnish fluoride packed in a single-use package. Simultaneously, two calibrated (Kappa=0.75) observers assessed the VFT practice of each health-worker, through DOPS including 14 quantitative variables (scoring 0-2), modified and reported in range of 0-100. The statistical analysis of mean scores of DOPS between two groups was done by t-test, and for mean scores of DOPS among four children received intervention by Repeated Measures Anova. For Post-Hoc analysis Bonferroni technique was used.
Result: Mean score of DOPS for "Multimedia-plus" group (93.3, SE=1.2) was higher (P=0.001) than "multimedia" group (75.2, SE=1.8). In "multimedia-plus" group, mean scores of DOPS among four children received VFT were not different (P=0.12). In "multimedia" group mean score of DOPS in first child received VFT was different (P=0.02) from the third and fourth children |
