Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : The 8th World Congress on Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Title of your Abstract : MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY OF MEASLES VIRUS IN IRAN
country : Cape Town, South Africa
From : Monday, November 18, 2013
To : Friday, November 22, 2013
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Purpose/Objective
Measles virus (MV) genotyping is an important component of measles surveillance in the context of monitoring immunization program effectiveness towards measles elimination. The molecular epidemiology and genetic variability of circulating MV strains in Iran during the 2010–May 2013 were studied in consecutive MV isolates.
Materials and Methods
Specimens of blood, urine and throat swab from suspected cases of measles were collected from different regions of Iran. Detection of IgM specific antibodies to measles in sera was performed using a commercial ELISA kit. Virus isolation was performed on urine and throat swabs of confirmed serologically measles cases. For virus isolation, the specimens were inoculated onto Vero/hSLAM cell line. Partial nucleoprotein gene segments of MV including the 456 N-terminal nucleotides were amplified by RT-PCR. PCR products were sequenced in both directions. Sequenced data were analyzed by Bioinformatics software.
Results
From confirmed cases by ELISA, 57 (25.6%) were obtained from viral isolates using cell culture and the 166 (74.4%) were obtained directly from clinical samples.
Conclusions
Although vaccination programs have decreased successfully the incidence of the disease, sporadic cases and outbreaks continue to occur. During 2010-May 2013, genotypes B3 and D8 (for the first time), H1 (for the second time) and D4 were detected mainly in persons living within communities that had low vaccination status such as inland rural areas and hard-tor each community with traditional lifestyle. According to the new measles elimination strategic plan of the WHO/EMRO, Iran as one of the member of this region aimed to eliminate MV by 2020.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : 2000
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Most of the countries all over the world including African, American, European and Asian countries
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : WSPID,AfSPID,ESPID, ASPID.
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : The design of my poster was so attractive that encouraged others to find out what is the story of this project at the first step. Since the priority of WHO is to eliminate measles virus in Europe and many African and Asian countries by 2015, it raised many questions for scientists from other countries that what is the situation of our measles surveillance and interestingly it turned out that situation of measles surveillance is similar in Iran and other countries such as Italy, Spain, Turkey, India. Our data had shown that our attempts for Measles elimination were successful and there were some requests from me to explain the details of protocols we used like virus isolation, RT Nested PCR and sequence analysis. Taken together the results as well as my presentation attract many attentions and leads to many scientific discussion and science exchange.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. :

Dr. A.Omotayo Faneye from Nigeria
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : Unfortunately, our country was considered as a high income country and included in list A countries in WSPID congress therefore the registration fee was expensive and it would be difficult to afford for attendances from Iran . Fortunately, Professor Shabir Mahdi the chairman of the congress accepted to consider our country in list B and reduce the amount of registration fee for the next WSPID congresses in 2015.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : There were some problems that made the process of attendance in WSPID congress very difficult such as ticket was very expensive also according to the long journey there were many connections during the trip that make it exhausting. But the main concern was the inability to transfer money via Iranian bank to pay registration fee and the unavailability of credit card to book accommodation.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The WSPID have developed a high quality scientific programs and attending to this congress have updated my knowledge with the latest developments in the field of pediatric infectious diseases and stimulated open dialogue about this subject worldwide. Also researchers and clinicians from all over the world shared their latest findings, technical expertise and experiences that create a much-anticipated international event. This congress is held every two years and is one of the most important meetings in the pediatric filed. I successfully participated in the 8th WSPID 19-22 November 2013, Cape Town, South Africa. I have presented my poster at 19 and 20 November and during the congress I was involved in the several professors meeting (that was great for me) as well as all invaluable sessions. I am really satisfied of the period I spent in the WSPID congress. I talked with some main lecturers in different sessions and achieved some opportunities to update my knowledge in different field of viral pediatric infections. Also the company’s exhibition area was also very interesting for getting familiar with new vaccines, drugs and technologies.
