ABSTRACT

Objectives: The objective of this study was to find any relationship between higher BMI and waist to hip ratio (WHR) with the occurrence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).
Background: For decades it has been assumed that high body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for CAD, but findings of some recent studies were paradoxical.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional prospective study that included 414 patients with suspected coronary artery disease in whom coronary angiography was performed in our hospital. The mean ± SD of their ages were 61.2 ± 27.4 years (range 25-84years) and 250 (60.4%) of them were male. Regarding cardiovascular risk factors 113 (27.3%) had a history of diabetes mellitus (DM), 162 (39.1%) had hypercholesterolemia, 238 (57.4%) had hypertension, 109 (26.3%) were current smoker and 24 (5.8%) had a family history of CAD. The mean ± SD of patients BMI was 26.04 ± 4.08 (range 16-39) and mean ± SD of patients’ WHR ranged from 0.951 ± 0.07 to 0.987 ± 0.05. Severity of CAD according to SYNTAX and Duke score were 17.7 ± 9.6 (range 0-64) and 3.2 ± 1.7 (range 0-12) respectively.
Results: Our findings in this study were in favor of negative correlation between severity of CAD and BMI according to both SYNTAX and Duke scores (p<0.001 and p=0.001 respectively). However there was a positive correlation between WHR and severity of CAD according to Duke score (p=0.03).
Conclusions: BMI does not have positive correlation with the severity of CAD, but WHR has.
Keywords of your Abstract : Key words: Body Mass Index; Waist to Hip Ratio; Coronary Artery Disease; SYNTAX and Duke Score

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : About five hudreds
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Delegates from Iran, Midle east and Pacific counteries, India, east Asia counteries, Africa and north America presented in the congress.
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : From Tabriz Universities of Medical Sciences, from Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences, from TUMS....
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : My poster attracted attention and appreciation of many delegates and faculties. The specific questions that have been raised were regarding the prevalence of abdominal obesity and high BMI in Iranian population. Also the prevalence of coronary artey disease in Iranians and its relationship with abdominal obesity and BMI, and the reasons for high BMI and Wiest to hip Ratio (WHR) as well.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : I met a few staff members including chairman of congress" Asher Kimchi" and some members of American Colleg of Cardiology, American Association For prevention and Heart valve sosiety of America. Also I met staff members that were Iranian such as Dr Mohamad Navab from UCLA. He is doing research in athersclerosis since long ago and is very expert in this field, Dr Mohamad Reza Movahed from University of Ariza, he is chair of department there, Dr Jamshid Shirani from St Luke's University, he is also chair of departmen there.
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : Iranin physicians in abroad especially those who are faculty members are very well trained and can be very effective in upgrading our teaching hospitals, if our Universities could atract them. Of course one way is that our university give the opportunity to them to be temporal staff of our university as well, and have Scientific cooperations with them in terms of basic and strategic researches and multicenter clinical trials. we can also asked them to share in our scientific progects, as a referee or consultant.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Processes were very complicated, especially travel processes to North America and very expensive.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : About five hundreds articles have been presented by oral or poster in the field of cardiology, that were very intresting. Also a few lecturs in the fields of basic and clinical sciences have been delivered by guest speakers an faculties that were very interesting as well. Lectures invoved all aspects of cardiology including new basic researches, pathophysiology and/ mechanysm of diseases, novel therapy for cardiovascular abnormalities or diseases from biomolecular and genetic disorders to congenital and aquired structural heart diseases including valvular, coronary and myocardial involvements. To me this congress was very intresting and fruitful, and I gained a lot of experience regaring basic and clinical knowledge of cardiology. Also I had the opportunity to talk about unsolved problems in the field of cardiology and especially interventional cardiology with experts in this fields.
