Abstract

Objective(s): Elder abuse is currently recognized internationally as a common problem with serious consequences for the health and wellbeing of old people. This study sought to produce an estimate of the prevalence of and risk factors for elder mistreatment and types of abuse in an urban Iranian population.
Design and Methods: A cross-sectional, population-based, descriptive study was conducted on three hundred elderly, aged 60+ years, utilizing two health centres in Ahvaz, a province in central Iran in 2012. The participants were interviewed in their homes to collect data on risk factors and mistreatment, elder mistreatment being defined as abuse belonging to any of the four major forms: psychological, financial, physical or neglect by an immediate family member, in-laws, or relatives.
Results: Elder mistreatment was reported by 14.7% of the participants. Physical (70.4%) and neglect (61.4%) were the most common subtypes of total mistreatments. Univariate analysis showed the most consistent associations of abuse types to be with being female (OR=2.34, CI 1.17 - 4.69), with education (OR=0.36, CI 0.17 - 0.71), and with dependency on children for an income to live (OR=3.18, CI 1.57 - 6.41). A multivariable logistic model indicated income dependency to be the only predictor of mistreatment (OR=2.30, CI 1.10 - 4.81).
Conclusion: Our data shows abuse of the elderly to be prevalent. The fact that income dependency is the most important predictor of mistreatment of Iranian elderly suggests that addressing their income status with preventive intervention by establishing a social security system in Iran that provides for the elderly would have significant social welfare benefits.

It was wonderful conference as an International Federation conference on ageing.
I have been done the membership and nominated of the Tehran Medical University as an Iranian member in this international federation conference on ageing for the first time. So, Iran has been joined to the international federation on ageing. By this way, the representative of Iranian ageing members could attend in each annual meeting.
I think it was my great job and task in this conference that I am being honored!
Otherwise, I think to attend in this annually congress would be so useful to Iranian academic staff that working in the field of Gerontology & Geriatric to familiar to new themes and subjects.
This was an International conference under observed of World Health Organization and other donations from USA, Canada and Australia. This was a multidisciplinary conference, so visiting and meeting of the other academic members from other countries in different fields that are relevant to ageing studies usually could be useful to learn more about ageing field by other sectors such as physiotherapist, health economist, and health policy makers and so on. The other benefit of this conference was attended of private sectors and international companies with a varied range from IBM, Ford company, Mobile and internet companies that to product of some devices to use of old people. Listening to variety presentation from different field was so knowledgeable to me.
Meanwhile, in this congress there were many parallel workshops about age friendly cities that were full of new idea and lessons learned to me as a Gerontologist. In this conference there was a chance to inform about the new topic and themes that now, most of the developed countries working on it as a agenda. From my point of view, aged friendly cities issue included many new subject and topics to work on it by students and or as research proposals.
In the aged friendly cities workshop, also we had an oral presentation about the report of this project in Iran that was done by Tehran municipally.
Besides, I familiar with the some academic researchers who were working in the ageing research institutes in the valuable centers of ageing all around the world. Meanwhile, I found, how could I connect and communicate with them. I was a great opportunity to me!
To me, the best and important part of this conference was joined and access to the International Federation on line Journal that they will send it to me. This Journal is a good opportunity to us as an Iranian member to inform an up to date in ageing news from all around the world. On the other hand a nice chance to us to announce or publish our activities or reports on this online Journal and even though sometimes asking a help or consult from the international advisory.
From my point of view, there were some interesting educational topics in this conference as well. Those topics included:

2- Aged friendly cites, by Prof. Ian Philp, UK
3- Dementia care and center for Alzheimer, Canada
