Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Effect of probiotics on oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Introduction & Objectives
The dramatic increase in the incidence of diabetes and its associated complications require a natural and safe solution to control and delay such complications. The present study tested the hypothesis that probiotics may affect some oxidative stress and inflammatory markers of diabetic patients.

Materials and Methods
Thirty four types 2 diabetic patients aged between 25 to 65 years, and diagnosed with diabetes for less than 15 years were selected for this single- blinded clinical trial. Using balanced block random sampling, the patients were divided into two groups of intervention (probiotics) and placebo. Blood samples tested for baseline malondialdehyde, high sensitive CRP (hs-CRP) and IL-6. After six weeks of experiment, fasting blood samples were re-tested and the data obtained were analyzed using SPSS software.

Results
There were no significant differences between anthropometric data including body mass index and waist to hip ratio in placebo and treatment groups. MDA and IL-6 levels were reduced and high sensitive CRP (hs.CRP) levels were elevated, although, not statistically significant.

Conclusion
Overall results of this study indicate a declining trend in the MDA and IL-6 levels after consumption of probiotics. It appears the decrease in these parameters may have effect on decreasing cardiovascular disease risk factors.

What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : The composition of the probiotics, colon microbiota tests, the methods for preparation of the probiotics capsules, colony counting tests, Iranian functional foods and the relation between industry and investigations about probiotics and functional foods in Iran, and some question about my future or published studies,...
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : President: Dorukcan Alkan, Secretary General: Tahacan Aydin, Scientific Director: Kadir Emre Yakisik, Public Relations: Duygu Guncikan
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : There were some presidents of international student congresses from Germany and the Netherlands at this congress. The other students from some countries (Poland, Bulgaria, ...) introduced their future congresses to us, but unfortunately, we don't have anything to talk about our international student congresses in our country!
Then, i have a key question! Why we don’t have these congresses anymore?! I remember, we had the first International Student Congress at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences at 2007, and the second one at Iran University of Medical Sciences at 2009, but these congresses suddenly stopped after these years!
one of the important conditions to become a global university is to propagate research among students and these congresses can help those who wants to enter this way!
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Istanbul became the capital of many big civilizations throughout the history, but most importantly Ottomans and Byzantines. You can see the most beautiful monuments of Turkey in the old city, which rests on the peninsula created by sea of Marmara and famous Golden Horn. Our accomodation was in KAYA HOTEL (not bad hotel, but not very well, price: 30 euros per night!). you can transported by buses, trams and subway and taxi.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : Turkey is a scientific bridge between two continents and this congress was an opportunity to merge the scientific contribution of more than 20 countries, in Istanbul.
The aim of the congress was to promote education, research, and social networking between its participants. The first task of this congress was to present the research projects conducted by the medical students.
Student Scientific Research Club (OBAK) of Istanbul University made a nice atmosphere for the participants and their organizing played an important role in international collaboration among students both socially and scientifically. The scientific and social programs were nice; however, it can be better by more precise programming at the next years.
Furthermore, these congresses provide an insight and a third dimension into the medical education.
