1.Brief summary of Leave : I started my sabbatical as visiting scientist in infectious diseases, infection control and employee health department in MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The title of my research project is “invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) in patients with hematologic malignancies”.
The process of conducting a research in MD Anderson includes several steps as follow:
First I had to pass 5 on line module and an instructor led class titled “human subject protection training”. This is a mandatory course for all faculties and fellows (including visiting faculty). Then I wrote a research protocol and submitted it for IRB (institutional review board). It is only after IRB approval that I had permission to start my data gathering.
Besides my research project which was my main occupation, I was attending several classes including:
- Weekly case presentations in which interesting consultations of previous week are introduced and discussed in department
- City wide ID round in which IDs from all Texas medical center hospitals present interesting cases
- Journal clubs, faculty/fellow research conferences held in Tuesdays
- Core curriculum, faculty led conferences, on Thursdays
- Scientific writing classes
I also accompanied infectious diseases faculties in their consultations in leukemia and stem cell transplant services s an observer.
2.List the objectives of your sabbatical leave as listed in your proposal and indicate how completely they were met : -IFS project: the abstract of the research was presented in ICAAC 2014 as a poster. The main article has been submitted and is under review.
-A case report entitled ”A long term survivor of disseminated Aspergillus and Mucorales infection: An instructive case” has been submitted for mycopathologica
As mentioned before, apart from reseach, taking part in consultations and classes was a great exprience in feild of infection in immunocompromised host.
3.Acheivements(Publications,research,et.al.) : Documents have been attached
4.Assessment of Value of Sabbatical leave(benefits, faculty development, future professional activities,...) : • The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. For 10 of the past 12 years, including 2013, MD Anderson has ranked No. 1 in cancer care in the “Best Hospitals” survey published by U.S. News & World Report.
• Faculties in infectious diseases department and Dr Kontoyiannis in particular ,who is deputy head in division of internal medicine, are all well known experts in field in infection in immunocompromised host. So it was a great opportunity for me to spend some time in this center. while doing a research and attending the classes and consults I saw many interesting cases in this field and learn many things not only about management of an individual patient but also about how their system works. Overall, it was a great experience and I also made a connection with some of their faculties and I hope to keep in touch with them in future.
