Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Risk Factors for Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis: a Case-Control Study
Mahshid Taheri
School of Nursing and Midwifery, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran
Introduction:
High incidence and recurrence rate of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) underlines the importance of identifying daily risk factors for this vaginal infection. The authors aimed to investigate factors associated with BV infection and recurrent BV.
Methods:
In this age-matched case-control study, 218 women who had a vaginal pH>4.5 and a Nugent score of 7-10 were considered as BV cases. Of these 218 women, 132 (60%) had a past history of diagnosed BV and had consumed the appropriate doses of metronidazole in past year, so they are considered as recurrent BV cases. 303 women in control group had no history of BV in past year and were matched with cases for age. All participants completed a questionnaire concerning, demographic characteristics, reproductive history, sexual behavior, vaginal health, active or passive smoking and chronic stress. Factors which had a P-value less than 0.05 in the chi-squared test were analyzed by a logistic regression test.
Results:
Significant risk factors for recurrent BV were multi-sex partner (OR=8.76, 95% CI=3.34-22.96), more than 3 intercourses per week (OR=0.45, CI=0.32-0.63) and second-hand smoking (OR=0.57, CI=0.37-0.87). Due to the culture of study population, the rate of active smokers was low in both groups (4% of cases and 6% of controls), so active smoking did not associate with BV in this study. Women who had been exposed to ≥10 cigarette smoke per day, had more chance for BV infection (OR=0.28) and recurrence of BV (OR=0.40). There was no association between BV and any contraception method.
Conclusion:
The study results support the strong association of women’s sexual behavior with recurrence of BV; this finding confirms other studies which suggested a sexual transmission as a probable way in the pathogenesis of recurrent BV. Correlation of active smoking with BV had been indicated in the past studies but second-hand smoking had not been investigated as a risk factor of this vaginal infection. Women should be informed about the possible impact of cigarette smoke exposure on their vaginal health.

Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : The visa application was stressful and the package of trip was expensive for us. I had some problems about online money transfer.
Paris is a wonderful city with amazing culture, warm and helpful people, perfect buildings and a beautiful Eiffel Tower. I have recorded all scenes in my memory.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The conference was a great experience for me. Participants from different countries asked me about reproductive science in Iran and I gave the applicable information to them. Some participants presented their culture and distributed some special gifts, like a Mexican boy which gave a Mexican hat to us.
New research Ideas were the main outcome of this conference for me. I met a Korean professor which she can guide me in my next projects. I talked with a Iranian man which was professor in Kuwait; he gave some information about international researches to me. I can say that everything and all moments were perfect.
