Z. Banu Bahsiabout Underlying all forms of global change, indeed part of it, is a population explosion. In little more than the length of an average lifetime, the population has quadrupled and it is not clear whether our numbers have already reached or even exceeded the earth’s carrying capacity; however, we have reached the limits for comfortable human existence. Indeed, life for all but a very small minority would be of greatly diminished quality and long-term sustainability would be at best a precarious possibility. Not only are numbers increasing at an unprecedented rate, people are moving around in the world on a scale never seen before, and this too is part of global change.
