Factors Associated with Nurses’ Competence in Neonatal Intensive
Care Units
The survivor rate of premature and low birth weight neonates
is increasing; however the number of newborns who require
admission to NICUs is increasing. The hospitalised neonates and
their parents need to receive competent care. Competent is a
multi-faceted and it is difficult to provide a single definition for
it. Although having broad range of knowledge and technical
skills can be considered among the most important aspects of
competency, it seems these are not the only criteria for assessing
neonatal nurses’ competency. The purpose of this paper is elaborating
on the different components of competency among neonatal
nurses. Integrating skills and knowledge with some other
important elements such as critical thinking, leadership and mentoring
ability, tendency to do research, safe and ethical practice
along with effective communication, professional development,
understanding the nonverbal of the neonates and planning based
on their individual needs can be considered as necessary aspects
of providing competent care in NICUs.

What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : I was the member of the panel in the congress ,in our panel there were three neonatalogist and a nurse. Each of us has presentation and the audiences have asked many questions about the way we are practicing the reflection with our students and ....they were very interested in the brief report that I gave regarding our NICUs in Iran.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : I have seen and visited many academicians from all over the word and I got some of their names and emails like prof S Gischler and Dr J Davis and ....
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : That would be great if for this event, each year the university could consider at least two delegates from Iran( one nurse and one physician) and pay their membership fee.The congress could consider one year free membership for invited speakers, also it would be great if the university could have support us more, financially speaking going to such a congress cost us a lot and your support is not enough at all, making us not to participate in future international events. Moreover, I think it is better to consider some kind of motivation for the invited speakers.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : The congress was a well known prestigious congress in the world. I was an invited speaker and in fact the only speaker from Iran , there were almost 13 participants from our country, all of them were neonatalogists and I was the only nurse.
Totally speaking the travel was a great experience for me . I have learnt a lot and made connections with many academicians and researchers. Barcelona was so beautiful and I really enjoyed visiting some historical places. Getting visa was a really time consuming job and the prices was so high and every thing was expensive.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : As I mentioned before the congress was a well known prestigious congress in the world and very interesting concepts were presented. The staff of the congress were very welcoming. There were very informative workshops and some of them were free of charge but for most of them we had to pay. It was a really big congress and I really enjoyed the way they organized every thing. There were speakers from most of different countries in the world and their services , reception and facilities were very good, all the rooms and amphitheaters were packed by participants and at the end of most sessions there were time for discussion sections which was great and audiences had time to ask their questions .The place that they have considered for the conference were great and the location was so good. There were access to every were in the city and public transport was good. One fantastic facility was the station of Hop in Hop off buses which was in front of the entrance door of the conference gate.
