Title of the Congress : 4th European congress of Immunology
Title of your Abstract : Increased Caspase-1 and EBV load in active phase of Multiple Sclerosis disease

Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a T cell-mediated autoimmune disease, characterized by demyelination of nerve fibers in central nervous system. The cause of the disease appears to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Among the various proposed environmental causes, viruses such as Epstein- Barr virus (EBV) and Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) have recently considered as potential causes of MS onset and progression. Caspase-1 is a cysteine protease which in response to viral components activates and cleaves precursors of inflammatory cytokines, IL-18 and IL-1 . Caspase-1 is upregulated in oligodendrocytes of Multiple Sclerosis and EAE, and initiates pyroptosis in these cells. In this study we measured serum and cellular caspase-1 and serum levels of IL-18 and IL-1 in Relapsing-Remitting multiple sclerosis patients, in active phase (n=23) and healthy age-and gender-matched controls (n=19) using ELISA assay. Quantitative detection of EBV and HHV-6 DNA in serum of subjects were also performed using Realtime PCR. We observed that caspase-1 level was increased in serum from patients compared to controls (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in serum levels of IL-18 and IL-1 between groups. We found 34.8% of patients and 10.5% of controls EBV positive while, 21.7% of patients and 42.1% of controls were positive for HHV-6. There were positive correlation between IL-1B and EBV (p=0.01) and between IL-18 and serum caspase-1(p=0.01). There was a negative correlation between serum and cellular caspase. (P= 0.05). Our results suggest that caspase-1 elevates in serum following inflammation that could be because of increasing of EBV load.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : about 3000
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : most of the countries in the world such as Turkey, japan, United State, Australia, Canada,
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box :
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : I had a poster presentation.our result about the role of CD8+ T cells in multiple sclerosis was interesting for professors and students working on MS. they stopped on my poster and asked questions.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : I attended sessions talking on MS and other autoimmune diseases. I just asked some questions about my work from professors who saw my poster and had their comments.
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : No Thanks. I attended sessions talking on MS and other autoimmune diseases. I just asked some questions about my work from professors who saw my poster and had their comments. Research in Iran is not as serious as other countries. Attending these congresses is very helpful gaining motivation to work hard and better. University supporting of academic staff would be very useful for participation scientific meetings and improvement our works. Obviously, we also need financial support, equipped labs and better access to articles to do valuable works.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : There was not any problem for providing ticket but not having a credit card was a problem for reserving hotel.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The International European Congress of Immunology held on every 3 years in different countries in the Europe with high scientific level. The congress is usually scheduled for 4 days and different sessions of meeting are planned for different audiences such as keynote lectures, symposia, workshops, poster and so on.
The company’s exhibition area in the congress base floor was also very useful for getting familiar with new technologies in clinical laboratory and research immunology. One of the notable session was women in immunology symposium in which gender imbalance in science and societies were noticed. This symposium highlighted the historical prospective of exclusion of women in science and discussed their current situation in immunology.
