Aim
To finding the best candidates of the Karydakis Flap for sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD), the risk factors of wound complications of patients underwent the procedure were evaluated.
Method
Prospective data on 179 patients underwent Karydakis flap for SPD from May 2007 to ….. 2014 was analyzed. Patients were followed up for an average of 31.26±21.80 months. Patients with and without wound complications were compared to find risk factors of wound complications.
Results
There were 84.4% male patients with age range of 14-57 years and mean BMI of 26.27±3.74. In general, 34 patients (19%) developed wound complications. Partial skin disruption was the most common complication detected in 23 patients (12.8%). Infection was the second most common complication detected in 10 patients (5.6%). Less common complications included hematoma and seroma in 2 and 1 patients, respectively.
Significant relations was found between wound complications and history of previous SPD surgeries (P value = 0.003), number of midline pits (P value = 0.005), distance between cranial and caudal pits (P value = 0.005), distance between last caudal pit and anal verge (P value = 0.000), presence of lateral discharging sinus (P value = 0.039). Age, sex, height, weight, BMI, smoking, and duration of symptoms do not affect significantly on wound complications.
Conclusion
More wound complications were happened in patients with history of previous SPD surgeries, numerous pits, low distance of caudal pit with anal verge, and presence of lateral discharging sinus. |
