Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Background: Understanding the circumstances of drug-using women, as a hard to reach group, is a great challenge. This is even more of a challenge in the conservative societies, where drug-using women are highly stigmatized. In Iran Female Drug Users (FDUs) have their own belief models. This paper discuss one of the emergent themes of a qualitative research conducted with Iranian female drug users referred to a women-only-drop in centre in South Tehran, Capital of Iran. The data presented in this paper are the preliminary findings of the project aiming to explore the changes in sexual behaviors among those FDUs during addiction and maintenance treatment.
Methods: Using qualitative approaches. , five focus group discussions were conducted with 17 FDUs, and 24 individual in-depth interviews. Women were interviewed in the women-only drop-in center in South Tehran. Thematic and constant comparative analysis was used to analyze the data.
Results: Two major themes were identified: 'Gendered drug context' and 'sex selling complexity'. Using illicit drug is socially acceptable for males, but can be a big mistake. It is instead a dishonored event that ruins an individual woman. It was commonly believed that drug use adversely changes woman's life journey and her devastates her social dignity. Selling sex is the woman's her own choice through living with drug for two main reasons: 'drug has already ruined them' and 'a spoiled one deserves to be misused'; and “it is a life obligation”. They have intention to engage risky sexual behaviors. Avoidance, hesitation and delayed help seeking behaviors were extracted from women's narratives.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that stigma and discrimination have forced the women toward self –negation resulting in the delayed help seeking behaviors. There are forcing drives lead these women to join the commercial sex working (CSW) industry. Understanding these issues may enhance the impact of gender sensitive harm reduction programs.
