Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : The 4th scientific congress of Iraqi Urology Association Baghdad
Title of your Abstract : Transurethral plus Transvaginaly Periurethral Injection of Autologous Adipose Stem Cells to Periurethral Region for Treatment of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence
Destination Country : Iraq
From : Wednesday, February 17, 2016
To : Friday, February 19, 2016
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Purpose: Stress urinary incontinence is a common medical problem among women. The urethral closure complex and/or the support mechanisms are responsible for incontinence in the majority of patients. Several surgical procedures with different degrees of invasiveness and outcomes have been reported to treat the problem. Although many are reasonably effective, a general trend towards study of natural and biocompatible tissues is emerging over popular synthetic materials. Here we report our experience with injection of autologous adipose-derived stem cells to the periurethral region as a new method of stress urinary incontinence treatment.
Patients and Methods: Ten women with symptoms of stress urinary incontinence were treated by injections of autologous adipose-derived stem cells into the periurethral region via transurethral and transvaginal approach under urethroscopic observation .This report presents the short-term outcome of the patients. The outcome measured by pad test results, ICIQ-SF scores and Qmax.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 45.8 ± 8.7 years. Urinary incontinence significantly decreased through the first two, 6 and 24 weeks after the injection therapy. The difference was significant in pad test results (p<0.001) and ICIQ-SF scores (p<0.001), especially comparing results between 2 and 6 weeks and among 6 and 24 weeks, but not for 2 and 6 weeks compared to each other. Surprisingly, Qmax showed improvement after the study period (means 32.6 vs 35.7; P=0.002).
Conclusions: This study showed that injection of the autologous adipose-derived stem cells to periurethral region is a safe, yet shot-term effective treatment option for stress urinary incontinence. Further studies with longer follow up are needed to confirm its long term efficacy.

What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : I had 2 lectures followed by 10-minute Q & A sessions each; many questions were raised on both subjects (transplant from cadaver and stem cells in urologic diseases) and the interest of the audience was remarkable.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : Dr. Nibbras Al-Hamdani (Consultant Urologist/Secretary General of Arab Association of Urology/ Secretary General of Iraqi Urlogy Association) & Dr. Mohammad N. Al Mosawi (Head of Najaf Urology Department)
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : Since 19th Iranian Urology Congress is held in Iran, the participants of this very congress as well as other international scholars are invited and we are communicating with them; it is expected that mutual scientific cooperation can be formed at the regional level. However, the International Affairs Department can communicate with Dr. Nibbras Al-Hamdani (drnibbras@yahoo.com OR drnibbras62@iraqiua.org).
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : All expenses were covered by the congress; the visa was issued by the Immigration Office of Iraq in Baghdad and their hospitability was great.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The organization both scientific presentations of the materials as well as the timing were excellent. Also, airport transfer at arrival and departure were perfect without long waiting times. The overall organization was beyond expectation. A very appropriate high-tech area was allocated to the subsidiary exhibition, live surgeries and poster presentation. Moreover, there were many hotels with fair prices close to the congress convention center. The convention center was located at a spot with a great view to the sea and this could refresh the participants coming out of the halls after several hours of mental work. The facilities provided for issuing certificates, paying registration and membership fees were admirable and all tasks were done within a few minutes. This leads to better planning for subsequent years and this brings about more income for organizers and more enthusiasm for the participants.
