Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the serum levels of androgens and CAD in an Iranian population.
Methods: Male individuals who admitted Tehran Heart Center and Sina Hospital were categorized into CAD and control groups based on selective coronary angiography. Baseline demographic data, including age, BMI, diabetes, and a history of hypertension were recorded in the data collection form. Patients were also assessed for their serum levels of total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S) and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG). Data analysis was carried out chi-square and ANOVA tests as well as logistic regression analysis.
Results: Two hundred patients were in the CAD group and 135 individuals were in the control group. In the CAD group, 69 had single-vessel disease, 49 had two-vessel disease, and 82 had three-vessel disease. Statistically significant differences were observed between the individuals in the two groups with respect to age (P<0.0001), diabetes (P<0.0001), and a history of hypertension (P=0.018). The serum levels of free testosterone (P=0.048) and DHEA-S (P<0.0001) were significantly higher in the control group than in the CAD group; however, the serum level of SHBG was higher in the CAD group than in the control group (P=0.007). Results of the logistic regression analysis indicated that only age (P=0.036) and diabetes (P=0.004) had significant relationships with CAD.
Conclusion: Although the serum levels of some of the androgens were significantly different between the two groups, no association was found between androgenic hormone levels and the risk of CAD, due mainly to the effect of age and diabetes.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : I have been the official member of SIU since 1988 and am looking forward to hosting the congress in Iran one day provided that diplomatic issues are resolved and we could welcome people from all member countries. Providing facilities for holding such international events is also significant. Apart from the 2,000 participants, there are other individuals (a total of approximately 5,000 persons) including spouses of the participants and staff of biomedical, pharmaceutical and drug manufacturing companies that participate in exhibitions held during congress time. This is an opportunity for all members of different countries to propose hosting the international congress. In case of having the possibility to meet the requirements for such actions, SIU office at 1155 University, Suite 1012
Montreal, QC, H3B 3A7
Canada can be contacted.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : All were fair
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : Every year, the organizing committee presents new issues and facilitates the congress process. Similar to previous years, the SIU congress 2013 was held in a vast area, a multi-storey building with several halls and a large auditorium with the capacity of 3000 persons. The audio-visual equipment was quite advances and audiences could see the speakers on monitors and hear their voices with the best quality at any spot in the hall. A very appropriate high-tech area was allocated to the subsidiary exhibition, live surgeries and poster presentation. Moreover, there were many hotels with fair prices close to the congress convention center. The convention center was located at a spot with a great view to the sea and this could refresh the participants coming out of the halls after several hours of mental work. The facilities provided for issuing certificates, paying registration and membership fees were admirable and all tasks were done within a few minutes. This leads to better planning for subsequent years and this brings about more income for organizers and more enthusiasm for the participants.
Another interesting even during SIU congresses is the first day tradition (10AM-12) of having all delegates going over their current issues, discussing it with the colleagues and obtaining feedbacks. The before the closing date is the voting time for the General Assembly Board of Chairmen when the nominees are determined and votes are counted to assign the board members.
