Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : British Pharmacological Society
Title of your Abstract : A randomized double-blind clinical trial comparing the efficacy and safety of Crocus sativus L. with fluoxetine for improving mild to moderate depression in post percutaneous coronary intervention patients
Destination Country :
From : Tuesday, December 16, 2014
To : Thursday, December 18, 2014
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Objective: A significant correlation exists between coronary artery diseases and depression. The aim of this trial was to compare the efficacy and safety of saffron versus fluoxetine in improving depressive symptoms of patients who were suffering from depression after performing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods: In this randomized double-blind parallel-group study, 40 patients with a diagnosis of mild to moderate depression who had undergone PCI in the last six months were randomized to receive either fluoexetine (40 mg/day) or saffron (30 mg/day) capsule for six weeks. Participants were evaluated by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) at weeks 3 and 6 and their side effects were systemically recorded.
Results: By the study endpoint, no significant difference was detected between two groups in reduction of HDRS scores (P=0.62). Remission and response rates were not significantly different as well (P=1.00 and P=0.67; respectively). There was no significant difference between two groups in the frequency of side effects during this trial.
Limitations: Relatively small sample size and short observational period are the major limitations of our study.
Conclusion: Short-term therapy with saffron capsules showed the same antidepressant efficacy compared with fluoxetine in patients with a prior history of PCI who were suffering from depression.

How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : app#3000
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : USA, UK, Germany, France, Japan,....
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : Physiological Scociety
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : Yes regarding the novelty of our study as we reported Short-term therapy with saffron capsules was as efficient as fluoxstine in improving depressive symptoms of patients with a prior history of PCI who were suffering from MDD. Nevertheless, long-term efficacy and safety of saffron as well as its optimal dosing requires further investigations.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : It was interesting for audience and asked a number of good quistions regarding the follow up of the study and future studies with Crocus sativus in the treatment of Depression and inparticular with comparisin with other medication such as SSRIs, SNRIs and also in the reatment of other type of depression

Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : I was the only participant from Iran. The BPS meeting is very famous in the world. Engaging with the policy landscape is an essential part of BPS fulfilling its strategic objectives. The active input of our members during, and on, the process is appreciated. A policy processes document has been developed to support their involvement. My presentation was was interesting for audience and asked a number of good quistions regarding the follow up of the study and future studies with Crocus sativus and inparyicular with comparision with other type of current medication such as SSRI and SNRI
