Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : 3rd ICHLSR - International Conference on Healthcare & Life-Science Research
Title of your Abstract : Early versus Late Nap during Night Shift and its Association with Psychomotor Driving Performance of Nurses
Destination Country : Thailand
From : Saturday, November 25, 2017
To : Sunday, November 26, 2017
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Background: Sleep deprivation leads to fatigue and sleepiness among health care workers and can result in road traffic collisions (RTC) after their shift. Planned napping is one of the main solutions proposed to avoid this problem.
The present study aimed at assessing the effect of 2 nap times during the night shift on psychomotor driving skills (that are required for safe driving) among night shift nurses.
Material and methods: A cohort study was conducted on 23 night shift nurses. The nurses completed the 8 tests of the validated traffic psychological assessment battery of Vienna Test System (VTS) before the night shift at 6 PM, and they repeated the same set of tests after the night shift at 8 AM.
Data were compared based on the nap times (00:00–03:00 AM versus 03:00–06:00 AM), which were chosen by the night shift nurses.
Results: Nurses aged 23 to 36 years participated in this study. Their driving experience was 7.6 ± 4.6 years, and 34.7% reported RTCs in the previous year. The nurses who chose to take naps from 00:00 to 03:00 AM showed a significantly improved time-movement anticipation ability in driving compared to those who napped from 03:00 to 06:00 AM (p-value = 0.005).
Conclusion: Our study shows that speed and movement anticipation (ZBA Test) improved in the 00–03 nap group compared to the 03–06 group. Anticipation is a highly important psychomotor ability for safe driving. The ZBA test could be related to the ability of estimating the time to collision of two vehicles that are moving at a constant speed.
The advantage of a 00:00 to 03:00 nap time compared to 00:03 to 00:06 may be explained by sleep inertia, a physiological state characterized by a deficit of motor skills directly after rapidly waking up.
Laboratory studies with larger sample sizes are required to investigate the effect of nap times on other psychomotor skills.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : 50
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Japan, Poland, India, South Korea, Pakistan, Philippine, Malaysia
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : KASETSART UNIVERSITY
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : The vulnerability of healthcare personnel against RTC while returning home after a night shift was interesting for the audiences. We involved in discussions on how to protect the nurses while returning home after night shift, both after the presentation and during the coffee time.
The methodology of the research was also interesting for some audiences and I was approached by two participants from Philippine and Malaysia who were interested to generate data by using our VTS system.
We found out that the same problem we pointed out is present in several other countries including Philippine and Pakistan. There was a general agreement that healthcare providers should be transported safely back to home after their night shift; and this is the responsibility of the employer organization.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : The meetings during the conference were scientific and the researchers will progress mutual collaborations by themselves. We are thinking of exchange visit to our counterpart institutes to establish few mutual researches and also are assessing the feasibility of short term student exchange program.
There are some obstacles against student exchange programs. The most important barriers are the academic credit transfer and also the financial issues.
An agreement between our institutes that allows the students to pass few unite in the other institute, or do a research under supervision of the other institutes’ professors, would be highly effective.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : The conference was held in the campus of KASETSART UNIVERSITY and the accommodation was available in the campus site. This made the whole process of attending the conference and transport to/from accommodation site very easy.
I did not have any problem with taking ticket. However, transferring the registration fee was not straightforward. The conference office agreed to collect the registration fee cash onsite. This could be easier and safer if it was possible to wire the fee by using a bank.
TUMS paid the registration fee in advance; and it was a good idea to do that.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The conference held in KASETSART UNIVERSITY and there was accommodation available on site of the University Campus that was a good option. The Kasetsart University is the largest University in Thailand. Having five campuses in different regions of Thailand, it offers 561 curricula to 67,708 students.
The conference venue was away from business/tourist area; therefore, the atmosphere of the conference was quite academic.
I had interesting meetings with other researchers attending the conference and we exchanged the contact information for further collaboration later an the new concepts in healthcare.
