Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : AMEE International Association of Medical Education
Title of your Abstract : Students' attitude towards and self-reported practice of risk-based management of caries after using blended method compared with workshop
Destination Country : Spain
From : Saturday, August 27, 2016
To : Wednesday, August 31, 2016
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Background: Traditional methods of teaching in medical sciences has been improved by applying new methods such as electronic media.
Summary of Work: The aim was to assess attitude and self-reported practice of students following a course on caries risk assessment (CRA) using blended method compared with workshop. A validated questionnaire (Cronbach’s alpha=0.7) was used and a group of 82 students were invited and assigned to two groups randomly as I) a 3-day workshop and II) blended learning working with the developed website (www.risk-assessment.ir). The mean score of attitude and self-reported practice were compared before and immediately after the course using SPSS ver 16.0. The medium-term practice of students was assessed by reviewing the patients note in the following semester.
Summary of Results: The response rate was 95% and 59% of the respondents were female. In the traditional group (n=38) the baseline mean score of attitude (0-30) was 26 (2.95) and in the blended learning group was 25.82 (3.48), both improved after the course 27.28 (2.54) and 26.73 (2.43), respectively. The mean score of practice (0-4) has improved in both groups significantly (p<0.05). In medium –term follow up the more students in the blended group delivered risk-based management including risk assessment, oral hygiene instruction (p<0.05) and fluoride therapy for their patients.
Discussion: Both methods were successful in improvement of attitude and practice of undergraduate students regarding caries assessing risk. The medium-term assessment showed more sustained practice in the blended group.
Conclusion: In complicated education topics, learning can be facilitated by combination of traditional and modern techniques.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : between 150-250 medical staff and students
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : UK, US, Australia, Pakistan, Iran,..
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : ADEE
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : There was 5-min presentation for each poster and after that there was Q&A. There was concern on how students responded to e-learning material and how they cooperated.
The general feedback was positive and they were impressed by how dental students motivated on using media and e-learning.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : There were many academic people and students in the field of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy at the international level. I had the opportunity to meet Prof Manzanares, secretory general of ADEE.
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : Medical education has got more attention in Iran as a tool to update our method of teaching and assessment. In future there is need to actively participate and share our experiences with experts at the regional and international level. More focus on collaboration with leading universities on the medical and dental education field is needed.

There is no need to further action regarding the current conference.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Fortunately there was no problem in the travel process and accommodation was facilitated through conference. The process of visa was time consuming.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : Many academic staff in all fields including basic sciences, clinical medicine, dentistry, pharmacy were attended as well as medical students from different countries.
Many events including workshops, PhD report, poster session and exhibition gave attendees deeper insight to the field. The sessions were on various topics. An interesting point was performing a CPR workshop working with a manikin and digital screen to show the improvement in vital signs during the conference break.
There was a joint meeting of AMEE/ADEE which was held on 27th Aug. The focus was on the role of dentist on oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
More emphasis on problem-based learning for future dentists on common health problems.
There was a session on PhD report which gave the PhD students opportunity to present the whole work and get feedback from experts in the field which was very interesting.
