PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

TUMS MSc-Medical Education program is delivered as both face to face and virtual programs with two primary goals:

1.To give students a theoretical foundation in medical education areas as well as to train students in practical aspects of the areas including:

  •  Curriculum planning,
  •  Science of learning,
  •  Teaching skills
  •  Student assessment
  •  Program evaluation

2.To provide students with protected time to engage in research (as their theses) on the most important issues in the field.

The program is designed for those who are new to medical education or who wish to acquire further knowledge and skills in medical education.

·      The virtual program is designed specifically to facilitate the admission of faculty members of TUMS academic departments or MD, DDS, and PharmD students who are interested to study medical education alongside functioning in their departments or studying their MD courses. Admission process for this program is based on an MMI exam holding by TUMS medical education department.

·      The face to face program applicants are BSc graduates from various health science disciplines such as nursing, midwifery, public health and so on who are interested to continue their major in the field of medical education. Admission process for this program is based on a national exam for MSc programs.

The program consists of two phases: education and research.

1.Education phase encompasses core and elective credits covering relevant themes within medical education and lasts three semesters.  The virtual program is flexible with two exit points: three or five semesters.

2.Research phase lasts one year in average. Students are encouraged to selects topics which address local problems as well as are align with the latest medical education literature.

Our teachers have a multidisciplinary background which in turn is reflected in their teaching and resulted in high quality program. The certificate is accredited by Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MoHME).

Research

Although students involve in research through several classroom projects and assignments, their main research activity is the final thesis, which is a requirement at TUMS for all MSc and PhD students.

Students are advised to select their research topic during the first or second semesters. While a developmental project in the educational field is acceptable for MSc thesis, PhD students have to generate a noble and theory-driven research idea.

The proposal, first, has to be reviewed by Med Edu department, and then, by School of Medicine Graduate Council. Following the approval of proposal, students are allowed to start their research.

After completion of thesis, and approval of the supervisor, the student presents his/her thesis in the defense session. MSc students are encouraged to submit a paper based on their thesis, but it is not necessary for them to have the acceptance. However, PhD students have to publish at least two papers to be allowed to defense. Both papers have to be published in ISI/Pubme-indexed journals. While one paper is certainly needed to be driven from the students’ thesis, the other may be published as a result of scholar activities during the PhD.

A thesis guideline has been provided by Med Edu department and students who are starting their research phase should read it carefully

Journal Club/Watch

Journal club/watch is run every other week (8 sessions in a semester) by medical education PhD students, and all students and faculty members with an interest in medical education are welcome to attend.

While the primary aim of the journal club/watch is to increase MSc and PhD students’ awareness of emerging topics and trends, discussions based on the papers facilitate analytical interpretations and constructive criticism. This program also gathers students and faculty members together, and creates an open environment in which collaborative and self-directed learning is enhanced.

The papers for journal clubs are selected by presenters under supervision of the deputy for research. Papers are related to research in different area of medical education, such as curriculum development, faculty development, teaching and learning methods, student assessments, program evaluation, etc.

For journal watch sessions, one issue from one of the prestigious journals in the field of medical education is selected and the presenter review all of its original papers.

An announcement providing a link to the paper(s) being discussed is sent out prior to each session.
