Department of Internal Medicine

 

 

The Department of Internal Medicine at TUMS is among the nation's premier departments, bringing together an elite team of clinicians, investigators and educators. The Department has 150+ faculty members, and its training ranks include 200+ residents and fellows. The Department of Internal Medicine provides a comprehensive program of clinical services including general internal medicine and all of its subspecialties at six


teaching hospitals. The Department of Internal Medicine is also engaged in highest quality medical education, training medical students in a reformed program and providing outstanding residency and fellowship programs. We train the next generation of leaders in internal medicine through education and promoting our trainees’ creativity and personal commitment. We aim to provide them with exemplary skills and attitudes for a life's work in medicine. In addition, the Department of Medicine is engaged in state-of-the-art research through several research institutions with international collaborations that offer numerous opportunities for biomedical research. There are well-known institute affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences such as Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute) EMRI), that has been founded in 1993. Due to the commitment and efforts of members, EMRI currently has the highest possible administrative status of a research Institute in Iran.

International students at this department are studying in a wide range of fields including: Endocrinology and metabolic disorders, Epidemiology of non-communicable diseases, cell therapy and other biotherapies for diabetes and endocrine disorders, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, sensor and biosensor,  genetics and molecular modeling, brain and behavioral studies in NCDs, metabolomics and genomics , pharmacology and novel drug delivery system in endocrine, and metabolic disorders

 

Research Opportunities:

Endocrine related research activities are conducted at 3 research sub-institutes each including   several research centers namely, Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinical Sciences(Osteoporosis, Diabetes, Endocrine, Evidence Based Medicine, Personalized Medicine Research Centers), Molecular- Cellular Sciences (Biosensor, Obesity and Eating Habits, Metabolic Disorders, Cell therapy and Regenerative Medicine, and Metabolomics and Genomics Research Centers), and Population Sciences Research Institutes (Chronic Diseases, Elderly Health, and NCDs Research Centers ).

EMRI has possesses equipped and modern laboratories such as food and drug, hormone, bionanotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and genetic research laboratories. Clinical facilities, diagnostic laboratories, and imaging departments are also integrated to ensure covering wide ranges of activities.

Digestive Disease Research Institute (DDRI) 

The Digestive Disease Research Institute (DDRI) was first established in 1993 in Shariati Hospital of Tehran University of Medical Sciences serves as a center of excellence providing state-of-the-art medical care and consultation in the field of gastroenterology and Hepatology.

 

There are various facilities in DDRI including: Upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy Unit, PH metrery and Manometery unit, Advanced endoscopy (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), double balloon endoscopy unit…), Video capsule endoscopy unit, dpecial clinics (hepatitis, motility disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatobiliary, transplant, …), patient education unit, etc.

 

This institute serves as the GI unit of Shariati hospital and provides education for students in all levels: General medicine, Internal Medicine, Subspecialty in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Ph.D. by Research , Post-doctoral, Sabbatical programs and Short comprehensive courses.

 

The major fields of interest include upper Gastrointestinal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disease, chronic hepatitis (including nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis), non-invasive disease markers, stem cell research, celiac disease, and motility disorders (including achalasia).

Rheumatology Research Center (RRC)

Rheumatology Research Center (RRC) has been founded in Shriati hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) in 1981. and it was chosen as the "Center of Excellence" for rheumatology in Iran 7 years later.

Nephrology Research Center (NRC)

The Nephrology Research Center (NRC) was first established in 2010 in Imam Khomeini Hospital of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and was subsequently recognized as a center of excellence in nephrology in 2010 providing medical care and consultation in the field of nephrology:

 

Renal Dialysis Unit: hemodialysis unit with more than 30 Dialysis Machines, Peritoneal Dialysis, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Kidney transplant unit (more than 100 kidney transplantation each year from deceased and Living donors), Nephrology wards in four hospitals, Hypertension and Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM), Clinic Bioimpedance Clinic

 

Research Opportunities: Urinary tract neoplasms, Urolithiasis, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and kidney transplantation, Dialysis, Polycystic Kidney Disease, Diabetic Nephropathy, Hypertension, Glomerulonephritis

Hematology, Oncology and SCT Research Center (HORCSCT)

The Hematology, Oncology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Center was established in 1990. From the late 2011, the Research center has been identified as the Research Institute for Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation following the expansion of the wards, development of scientific products and training specialists.
