Department of Community Medicine

Introduction

Department of Community Medicine was established in 1990 at TUMS School of Medicine. As the largest department of community medicine in Iran, we are committed to providing excellent education and training to students and residents in training. TUMS Department of Community Medicine conducts numerous educational and research programs in various fields of health-related topics and prepares future generations of physicians to become knowledgeable and skillful physicians, communicators, advocates, and partners in health for the individuals, families and communities which they serve. Community medicine, as a specialty, integrates biological, clinical, social, and behavioral sciences to promote health and wellness.

The Department of Community Medicine – through residency program – prepares future graduates of community-oriented physicians who can be leaders in public policy, community advocacy, and healthcare. The Residency Program of Community Medicine is a three-year training for qualified GPs who have passed the National Residency Entrance Exam which is held annually.

Research methodology workshops for different levels of education and training in rural and urban community health centers are other fields of education in this department. Preventive and health promotion clinic is another service which runs in one of teaching hospitals. Faculties of the department are involved in diverse research projects, namely estimation of attributable burden of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, diabetes; health information systems, quality of life, evidence-based medicine, medical ethics, violence prevention, medical education, social determinants of health, health economics, and clinical governance.

Community medicine research tries to produce knowledge addressing interactions in a society that influence the populations’ likelihood to preserve health or become sick, align with attempts to detect and reduce risk factors for health-related events both at individual and community level. Knowledge about social and cultural background in a given society is necessary for professional performance in community medicine.

Residency Program

The Community Medicine Residency Program is a three-year medical specialty program accredited by the Iranian Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education. The Residency Program is for training qualified GPs who have passed the National Residency Entrance Examination held annually.

This program is a three-year medical specialty program. The training program consists of theoretical Courses and rotations in different health related organizations and also administrative parts of Medical University and Ministry of Health. Residents also have clinical training in which they visit patients in Preventive clinics.

Within the training, graduates of the residency program may choose from a variety of career opportunities as Community Medicine Specialists, such as working as a public health physician at the local, provincial, national or international level; providing community-based clinical services with a focus on prevention; planning and administration of health services; assessment and control of determinants of health and/or teaching and research in an academic setting.
