General Director of Afghanistan Atomic Energy High Commission Meets with TUMS Vice-Chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs

To expand collaborations between Afghanistan and Iran, the General Director of the Board of Afghanistan Atomic Energy High Commission (Afghanistan’s Atomic Energy Agency) met with, Dr. Kordi, TUMS Vice-Chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).

Dr. Tahir Shaaran, the General Director of the Board of Afghanistan Atomic Energy High Commission, along with a panel of experts, had a meeting with Dr. Kordi, TUMS Vice-Chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs , with the aim of expanding collaborations in various fields of helath between the two countries.

According to the Office of Public Relations at TUMS Office of Vice-Chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs, in this meeting, held on 10 June 2019 by the Cancer Institute, the following were present: Dr. Sheibani, Head of the Cancer Control Committee of the Atomic Energy Organization; Dr. Malek, Director of the Asia Pacific Region of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran; Dr. Aghili, Director of Oncology and Radiotherapy at Imam Khomeini Hospital; Mr. Ghafoori, Deputy Minister for International Affairs of the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs;Mr. Akbari, Second Secretary of the Afghan Embassy in Austria; and Mr. Soleiman Saafi, from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Kordi started this meeting with a brief introduction of TUMS as the biggest and leading medical university in Iran, pointing to the international efforts of the university, including the establishment of the Department of Nutrition at Kabul Medical University by TUMS School of Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics with sponsorship by the World Bank.

 

Dr. Kordi also touched upon the subject of the recent meeting between the Ambassador of Afghanistan and TUMS Chancellor, stating that the two parties have reached agreements on acceptance of students, as well as exchange of faculty members and researchers.

Afterward, Dr. Aghili, Director of Oncology and Radiotherapy at Imam Khomeini Hospital, talked about the capacities of this hospital and emphasized that Imam Khomeini Hospital is ready to accept the applications for Oncology and Radiotherapy for expert education in five-year programs of study.

Dr. Sheibani, Head of the Cancer Control Committee of the Atomic Energy Organization explained Iran’s readiness to provide specialized health services as a hub for the region. He mentioned that there have been activities of the Atomic Energy Organization and the Nuclear Science and Technology Institute for technologies that are unique to the nuclear field, and, followed by the travel of a delegation from Afghanistan to Iran. He also stated that there have been agreements on 30 areas of cooperation in accordance with technical projects of Afghanistan

Dr. Tahir Shaaran, General Director of the Board of Afghanistan Atomic Energy High Commission emphasized upon the cultural and linguistic proximity of the two countries, expressing interest in the commencement of the anticipated cooperation based on the agreed training programs. Moreover, he mentioned that the Afghanistan Atomic Energy High Commission is about to establish Aliabad Hospital in Kabul and added that this hospital will become the biggest center for radiology in Afghanistan, and some of its staff will be trained in Iran.

Dr. Kordi summed up the topics and emphasized the importance of the expansion of collaborations between the two countries he explained that radiotherapy can be the beginning of collaborations between TUMS and Afghan medical centers.

He also mentioned that based on TUMS’s collaboration experience with different universities in the region and Europe, the university is ready to have any kind of joint degrees with Afghanistan’s medical centers and universities.

In the end, there parties agreed on the education of 7 fellowship students from Afghanistan in a one-year prpgram with the sponsorship of the International Atomic Energy Agency at Imam Khomeini Atomic Energy Organization. Also, there was a preliminary agreement regarding the collaboration of TUMS in the establishment of Aliabad Hospital.
