Abstract(Please copy/pastethe abstract sending the congress) : Calcium-vitamin D supplementation does not associate with kidney stone formation in postmenopausal women
Anousheh Haghighi, Hamidreza Samimagham, Golnar Gahardehi
Introduction: Osteoporosis is a disease of progressive bone loss associated with an increased risk of fractures. Calcium and vitamin D are two essential structural components of the skeletal system which prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal. However, there is a controversial debate on the association between the intake of calcium and vitamin D supplements and the increased risk of formation of kidney stones in postmenopausal women, which yet have to be confirmed.
Materials and Methods: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of kidney stones in postmenopausal women taking calcium and vitamin D supplementation. In a descriptive observational study, 53 postmenopausal women referred to rheumatology clinic of Rasoul Akram hospital who had no history of kidney stones, bone diseases (apart from osteoporosis), metabolic and rheumatic disorders and had not received calcium, diuretics and calcitonin were investigated. Renal ultrasound and blood tests was performed and the urine calcium levels were measured for a period of 24 hours for all patients. One year post treatment with supplemental Ca and vitamin D, the results were analyzed and compared with the data before the treatment.
Results: After one year, lithiasis was confirmed only in 1 patient out of 53 using ultrasound examination. No statistically significant differences were found between the 24-hours urine and blood calcium levels from before and after treatment.
Conclusion: In conclusion, our findings showed that oral intake of calcium and vitamin D after 1 year has no effect on the urinary calcium excretion rate and the formation of kidney stone in postmenopausal women.

How many volunteers were present at this meeting? : about 700-800

What were the response to your talking points? were specific questions or concerns raised? : Osteoporosis and its consequences, including fractures, are considered as a major public health concern all over the world. As there is a controversial debate on the association between the intake of calcium and vitamin D supplements and the increased risk of formation of kidney stones in postmenopausal women, this subject was attractive for most of the participants.
Most of the questions was about the registration criteria.
If you met with staff members, please list their full name & positions. : No
Please make a note if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the member of congress : Controversies in Rheumatology and Autoimmunity which was launched in Budapest was a well organised international congress. I recommend you to contact them in order to arrange an international congress in Iran or doing some research together. It could be a good opportunity for both of us to work together. Chairperson professor Szekanecz elaborates on the growing connection between Hungary and cutting edge rheumatology research: “We have built numerous collaborations within and outside Europe. Hungarian young investigators spend months in foreign labs and we try to meet as many of the criteria for being a center of excellence as possible.”
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : The most important point was about making an appointment with the embassy. Providing ticket and booking hotel was very easy.
Meeting summary:(include: names of every one in attendance, outcomees and personal observatons of the metting, and please make a note if there are any follow up actions we need to take with the member of congress or their staff): : This congress was held in Budapest.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary. As the largest city of Hungary, It is the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation center.
The name "Budapest" is a composite of the city names "Buda" and "Pest" since they were united (together with Óbuda) to become a single city in 1873.
Budapest is bisected by the River Danube. The city is as much a natural geographical center as it is the country’s transport hub. Budapest possesses a rich and fascinating history, as well as a vibrant cultural heritage. Recognizing the unique value of its traditions, it has managed to maintain its magic and charm, and is known as the "Queen of the Danube".
In April, 2013 an interesting project called Controversies in Rheumatology and Autoimmunity (CORA) was launched in Budapest. It was a great success with more than 700 participants. A fresh and intuitive congress structure was launched that included debate sessions on burning but controversial issues, plenary lectures, company-sponsored blocks and other scientific sessions including presentations of submitted abstracts.
CORA 2013 covered issues related to the clinical diagnosis and management, as well as the pathogenesis of rheumatic and autoimmune disorders. It has been conducted debates on the importance of genetic vs. epigenetic factors, on the involvement of bone destruction vs. formation in the pathogenesis of arthritides, on burning issues of targeted therapy including early treatment initiation, switching and stopping. Highly controversial issues of gout, lupus, inflammatory myositis and scleroderma was also covered. A disscution bout whether atherosclerosis is an autoimmune disease or not and what to use and what not in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis treatment was discussed too.
It was a good opportunity for me to take part in this international congress.
