Zayn al-Din Gorgani

 

Also active in the fields of philosophy, ethics, and theology, Gorgani was mainly active as a royal physician for some key figures of the Khwarazmian dynasty. 

 

The Treasure of Khwarazm Shah, Gorgani's most notable work among a repertoir of around 20 scientific publications, covers ten major fields namely the following areas:

  • Anatomy;
  • Physiology;
  • Hygiene;
  • Diagnosis and prognosis;
  • Fevers;
  • Diseases of certain body parts;
  • Surgery;
  • Skin diseases;
  • Poisons and antidotes; and,
  • Medicaments. 

 

As a student of Ibn Abi Sadiq and Ahmad ibn Farrokh and widely influenced by the works of Avicenna, Gorgani was a one of the key scientific figures of the Islamic Golden Age, and a renowned philosopher as well. 

 

Gorgani was finally laid to rest in the city of Hyrcania (modern day Gorgan) to the south of the Caspian Sea at the age of 95.
