Immunology, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute (IAARI)

The great advances made in basic and clinical immunology in the recent decades and the rise in the number of patients with asthma and allergies necessitated the establishment of a research center in Iran to encourage clinical and basic researches in the above fields. “Immunology, Asthma & Allergy Research Institute (IAARI)” officially began its scientific activities in the Children’s Medical Center in January 2001. UNESCO Chair in Health Education was also established in this center in 2004 with the aim of broadening national and international collaborations.

Activities of IAARI based on its strategic plan consist of: conducting research projects, presenting papers and abstracts, collaborating with other national and international scientific institutes, organizing workshops, educational and research courses for students, researchers, specialists, patients and their families, performing diagnostic tests for immune-deficient, asthmatic and allergic patients registering data, serum and DNA samples of immune deficient, asthma, allergic rhinitis, cystic fibrosis, hereditary angioedema and anaphylaxis patients for further research follow up the patients , and collaborating in publication of an international scientific-research journal in allergy, asthma and immunology and a newsletter.

Why IAARI?

Immunology, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute (IAARI) has been established with the mission of production of knowledge and technology to maintain and improve the health of society in immune-mediated diseases, asthma and allergy. IAARI works in multidisciplinary fields and tries to improve the knowledge and technology to promote the health indices of the society in the related fields, based on its strategic plan.

IAARI has several committees including research, ethics, bone-marrow transplantation and education with professional members. IAARI prioritizes its activities in the fields of research, training, publication networking, and advocating.

Iranian Basic and Clinical Immunology Network (IBCIN) and Iranian Primary Immunodeficiency Registry (IPIDR) were founded by IAARI with the purpose of providing a media for better communication of national experts in this field. Furthermore, several national registries including asthma, allergic rhinitis, immunodeficiencies and Hereditary Angioedema have been set up by IAARI.

Researchers and academic staff of IAARI attend international courses and congresses and IAARI holds several meetings each year to broaden its collaborative networks and facilitate communication between scientists.

IAARI, as a referral university center, has specialized lab facilities, such as genetic lab, cell culture lab and allergy lab in addition to general lab. The opportunity to have referral patients from all over Iran and also having experts and specialized tests enables this center to perform national and international researches and also train students from undergraduate to PhD level.

UNESCO chair in Health Education is also working in IAARI with the aim of providing public and specialized trainings in the fields of health. Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, an ISI-indexed journal, is also publishing international researches in the related fields by the aid of IAARI.

Research priorities:

  • Epidemiological evaluation of asthma, allergy and immunodeficiency diseases
  • Study of environmental and genetic factors in the pathogenesis of asthma, allergy and immunodeficiency
  • Evaluation of geographical distribution of plants and allergenic pollens in Iran
  • Purification of pollen and allergenic food extracts and collaboration for preparation of standardized extracts
  • Evaluation of educational and research methods in diverse social, hygienic and preventive levels especially in asthma, allergy and immunodeficiency diseases in specialized levels and also for patients and their families
  • Evaluation and improvement of quality life in asthma, allergy and immunodeficiency patients and their families
  • Establishing new laboratory tests in diagnosis and treatment of asthma, allergies, immunodeficiency and prenatal diagnosis
  • Registering patient in DNA, serum and cell banks for asthma, allergy and immunodeficiency
  • Study of new medications, traditional remedies and novel preventive and curative measures in asthma, allergies and immunodeficiency diseases
  • Evaluating bone marrow transplantation and immunomodulation methods in allergies, asthma, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency diseases
  • Proposing policies and research priorities in immunology, asthma and allergy to policy makers and legal authorities
  • Performing research in immune-related disease such as autoimmunity, tumor, infection and cardiovascular diseases
