Length of the Program
The program is planned to take 18 months. However, considering the capabilities and skills of the applicant, ascertained by the Retina Service interviewing board, a preparation period of maximum six months, may apply prior to the beginning of the fellowship program to familiarize the candidate with hospital facilities and help him/ her gain the necessary skills to begin with main fellowship program.

Educational objectives
The fellow will gain ability in the diagnosis of diseases of the retina, vitreous, and choroid. Additionally, he/she will be able to perform surgical, medical, and laser treatment of retinal and choroidal diseases. As a researcher, the fellow will be able to critically appraise clinical and scientific publications, and successfully carry out a research project that can be presented at national or international meetings and published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Clinical Facilities
The Retina Service is located on Farabi Eye Hospital. The current facility is fully equipped with therapeutic and diagnostic equipments. Spectral domain OCT, digital fundus and anterior segment photography, electroretinography, electrooculography, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, handheld OCT, RetCam, B-scan and A-scan ultrasonography, and UBM are used routinely.
A fully equipped Laser Clinic is active. The laser machines include argon, diode, Nd- YAG, and Pascal systems. Currently, more than 1250 patients receive laser treatments each month.
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Surgical Retina
Operating Room 1 in Farabi Eye Hospital with seven active operating tables, seven high speed vitrectomy machines, state of art surgical microscopes with wide angle viewing systems and recording instruments, and brachytherapy facilities for ocular tumors, is dedicated to vitreoretinal procedures. Two additional operating tables in Operating Room 4 of Farabi Eye Hospital (Emergency Department Operating Room) are also dedicated to vitreoretinal surgeries. About 2500 intravitreal injections, more than 380 vitrectomy and 30 scleral buckling procedures are performed monthly.
The preoperative (including active role in treatment planning), intraoperative and postoperative management of patients are among responsibilities of the fellow The fellow will participate in vitreoretinal surgeries and laser procedures, including pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling, 20, 23, and 25 gauge vitrectomy systems, intravitreal injections, and laser treatment for various eye diseases. Surgical training provides experience in the management of complex retinal detachments (giant retinal tears, traumatic retinal detachments, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and pediatric retinal detachments), intraocular foreign bodies, ablative therapy of intraocular tumors, and biopsy of retina and choroid. The fellow will also assist on, or sometimes supervise surgeries performed by a resident.
2. Medical Retina
There is a weekly Retina Case Presentation Conference, at which particularly interesting cases are prepared and presented by residents or fellows. In retina weekly Journal Club, selected recent publications concerning medical or surgical retina/uveitis topics are presented by the residents or the fellows and critically appraised by the faculty and the fellows. The retina fellows are also expected to actively attend and have periodic presentations in weekly Farabi Eye Hospital conference. The fellows may contribute in teaching and evaluating the residents. Fellows will take part in visiting and managing patients in Retina Consulting Clinic as well as in Retina Follow-up Clinics. In addition, there are active Oncology, Uveitis, Electrophysiology, and Retinopathy of Prematurity Clinics in Farabi Eye Hospital in which the fellows will have experiences as assisting or managing physician under the supervision of the faculty.
3. On- Call Schedule
Farabi Eye Hospital has the most loaded ophthalmic emergency department in Iran. The graduates of the Hospital are known nationally for their skills and expertise in managing trauma patients. The fellow will be involved in the management of the patients in the Emergency Department including posterior segment trauma patients, either as treating or supervising physician.
Research Responsibilities
The fellows have opportunities to participate in research projects in Farabi Hospital Eye Research Center. In particular, fellows are expected to accomplish at least one research project under the mentorship of the faculty during the course of the fellowship.
