THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN QUALITY OF LIFE AND HEALTH INSURANCE AMONG THE ELDERLY WITH MEMBERSHIP OF ELDERLY NGO: VOICE OF IRAN

Background: This study was performed to assess the rate of health insurance and its impact on quality of life of elderly Iranians in 2011.
Materials &Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among the elderly who were member of elderly Non Government Organization (NGO) in 2011.Data was collected by interview and short form questionnaire (SF-36) with 8 domains contained of physical function, role limitation of physical function, body pain, general health, vitality, social function, mental health, limitation of emotional function, the information related to insurance was determined by asking them. Data analysis was conducted by SPSS and by using T-test, ANOVA and Chi- square. Results: overall 424 elderly participating with mean age of ranged from 60 to 88years in study 362 people (85.4%) Had health and medical insurance among this population, versus 62(14.6%) without Insurance coverage. There were significant correlations between Insurance coverage and some variables such as sex, marriage status and socioeconomic status (p<0.005). The mean total scores of SF-36 in this group of having health and medical insurance compared to individuals without Insurance coverage (57.23±1.2) and (57.82±2.7) respectively. There were no significant correlation between insurance coverage and dimensions of SF-36 (p>0.05) exception physical function. On the hand study results revealed that there were significant correlation between the quality of life dimensions and socioeconomic status (p <0 .05).
Conclusions: It seems that some strategies and approaches for Strengthen and extend the coverage of insurance services in the fields of health care are needed to
improve the quality of life, especially for elderly people in society is essential. Keywords: Quality of life, Health insurance, Elderly
