Introduction:
Apart from the breast milk, baby weaning food has a special role in infant diet. After six month, nutritional and psychological needs of infant are increased and breast milk isn't enough. So complementary or weaning food is recommended by WHO. Lead and cadmium are heavy toxic metals that enter to food chain unavoidably. Infants and young children are the most risky group to these metals. The aim of this study is to determine the concentration of lead and cadmium in brands of baby food; rice and wheat based.
Materials and methods:
A number of 240 samples of rice and wheat based baby foods were prepared from market in Tehran, Iran. The complex composition of the sample may cause to changes in the calibration slopes, so the elements concentration was determined using the standard addition technique with three addition of the standard stock solution by Differential pulse anodic stripping voltametry (DPASV) method.
Results:
Lead and cadmium levels in wheat based baby weaning foods (n=120) were 0.072 0.010 and 0.069 0.009 mg/kg, and in rice based ones (n=120) were 0.020 0.002 and 0.032 0.003 mg/kg, respectively. Total Mean SE of lead and cadmium levels in baby foods (n=240) were 0.445 0.006 and 0.050 0.005 mg/kg respectively. In each products, level of lead and cadmium were lower than the standard limit (P<0.05). With comparing between two types of baby food in our study, lead and cadmium levels in wheat based one was higher than the rice ones (P< 0.05). Different plants such as wheat and rice absorb these elements based on their capacity.
Conclusion:
The result of this study shows that toxic heavy elements of Cd and Pb are within safety limits in baby weaning food products. But it seems that there is need to good quality control periodically.

Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Canada, USA, China, Bangladesh, Iran,
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : international union of toxicology
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : yes, importance of food safety in Iran specially for children. Cd and Pb have toxic effects on children growth ,brain and bone.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : sang Geon Kim,president, professor , college of pharmacy, seoul national university
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : this congress has been co- organized by the korean society of toxicology (ksot) korean envirenmental mutagen society(KEMS), The international Union of toxicology(IUTOX), and Environmentalomics(eomics). As the most highly acclaimed congress, a great number of abstracts have been presented from 70 countries. for this congress it was expected about 2000 participants from around the world and over 1600presentation including 260 invited lectures.
under the strong leadership of prof.Byung Mu Lee and prof. Sang Geon Kim, the korean society of toxicology has worked tirelessly to plan a superb scientific program around the timely theme, "Translation Toxicology : from basic sciense to clinicaland environmental outcomes"
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : the ticket and trip charges was too expensive, unbelievably
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : it was a very good exprience to visit other scientists from all the world. also make a relationship with some of them for future studies.
The ICT cogress was particularly special because featured the general assembly, which served the important purpose of ensuring the lasting success of IUTOX by electing its leadership for the next three year. every three years IUTOX family comes together to share fascinationwith science, rekindle old friendshipand forge new opportunities and collaborations.
we exprienced the sights and sounds of an exciting city that was new to many of us. in Seoul we find a vibrant city alive with the spirit of the Gangnam style living along side the elegance of its many ancient treasures.
the excellence of the congress has attracted prominent scientists from around the world to lecture on diverse topics covering many aspects of toxicology.
