Background: Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among women and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Almost all cervical cancers are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV), and HPV types 16 and 18 collectively account for 70% of cervical cancers worldwide.
Aim: We systematically reviewed HPV prevalence and it’s common subtypes in Iranian patients and healthy female population.
Search method: We systematically sought international databases including Pub Med, Scopus, and Google Scholar, as well as local databases including SID, IranMedex, Magiran and Irandoc for articles published prior to March 2012. The search terms were "cervical cancer” and “HPV” and “Iran.”. We included studies that fulfilled the following criteria: 1) clearly describing pathology or cytology of the samples 2) using polymerase chain reaction-based technology for detection of HPV DNA; and 3) reporting type-specific HPV prevalence. We estimated the weighted average of HPV in overall and HPV subtypes among cancer patients and among healthy women.
Results: We found 11 studies among cervical cancer patients and 3 studies among healthy female population that met our criteria(figure1). HPV was detected in 79% of the cancer patients (range: 59.4%–100%) and 7% of the healthy women. The most commonly detected HPV types were HPV 16 (56.4%) and HPV 18 (15.6%) and HPV 31(10.3%)(table1).
Conclusion: We could demonstrate that prevalence of HPV and its subtypes among Iranian cervical cancer patients was similar to that in other countries.
