:Objective:The aim of the present study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of Melissa officinalis, a major antioxidant plant, against neuron toxicity in hippocampal primary culture induced by 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or ecstasy, one of the most abused drugs, which causes neurotoxicity.
Materials and Methods:3-(4,5-dimethyl-2 thiazoyl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to assess mitochondrial activity, reflecting cell survival. Caspase-3 activity assay and Hoechst / propiedium iodide (PI) staining were done to show apoptotic cell death.
Results:A high dose of ecstasy caused profound mitochondrial dysfunction, around 40% less than the control value, and increased apoptotic neuronal death to around 35% more than the control value in hippocampal neuronal culture. Co-treatment with Melissa officinalis significantly reversed these damages to around 15% and 20% respectively of the MDMA alone group, and provided protection against MDMA-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis in neurons.
Conclusion:Melissa officinalis has revealed neuroprotective effects against apoptosis induced by MDMA in the primary neurons of hippocampal culture, which could be due to its free radical scavenging properties and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory effects.

If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : American medical association
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? :

Some questions were raised about the material and method of my experiance. The presentation was well received and two of the participants was interested in my experience and asked me about the full paper of my research.

If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : S.Baloyannis
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress :

No special thing to mention. The congress was scheduled for 4 days and different kinds of meeting was planned for different audiences ( like plenary lectuers, workshopes, lunchtime lectures and so on). I talked with some main lecturers in different sessions and to take the opportunity to update my knowledge in different fields of vascular dementia.

Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : The financial suport of Tehran university of medical sciences is not enough even for registration fee
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: :

This Congress was a combination of two Congresses one 8th international congress on vascular dementia and the first cognitive impairment European .The congress was scheduled for 4 days and different kinds of meeting was planned for different audiences ( like plenary lectuers, lunchtime lectures and so on).European Accreditation is granted by the EACCME in order to allow participants who attend this congress to validate their credits their own country. Each participant should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. In this congress they wrote to participan that ICVD 2013 and kenes international are committed to integrating responsible business practices all of our operations not just words but deeds. It is belief that by employing a green culture in the workplace they can duplicate this culture and the responsibilities it entails through their core business clients and onsite during their congresses. The print materials of this congress have been printed on paper made of 50-100% paper waste on paper that is PEFC approved. The PEFC is an organization that certifies paper manufactures which keep to sustainable forest managment criteria.Recycling As part of their efforts they try to produce less waste. They will also recycle plastic glass cans and paper. In their note they wrote that Before leaving the congress please dont forget to place your badges in the recycle bin for badges.Organizing green meeting all over the world is a big challenge as green is not only the onsite conduct but the supplies they are using the source of the raw materials the methods of production management of waste shipping vs.Using local products and fair management of labour throughout the supply chain.Next congress which will be held in Paris -France .
