Background review:
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition represents a crisis for children and their parents. Living with diabetes can put families under considerable strain and the parents often experience stressful and difficult events. Parental adaptation with the stress of diabetes is likely to play an important role in child and family adjustment to the disease.
Objective:
The purpose of this study is to explore Iranian parents’ adaptation strategies with type 1 diabetic child.
Methods
The data were collected by interviewing and observing in Diabetes Centers. Semi structured interviews were conducted with the 15 parents whose children suffer from T1DM. The interview guide consisted of open-ended questions to allow the respondents to clarify their own experiences. More explicit questions followed the early questions, allowing the researcher to discover the issues that had been raised by the participants in previous interviews
Results
The main category (peaceful coexistence) and subcategories were developed inductively from the data. Five periods of the parental adaptation strategies were identified, which were named Pity and compassion, Lack of awareness, Maternity and paternity Cooperation, Religion/Spirituality, Economic challenges. In the different periods of parental adaptation strategies, the parents' experience of family health threat, sense of normalization were different.
Conclusions:
There is no doubt that living with diabetes is a heavy encumber for children, and their parents. Parents were keen to know more strategies to assist their family to get back to normal life.
