Problem statement: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) consists of a group of heterogeneous pediatric disorders of chronic arthritis with undefined etiology. It is one of the most important causes of short term and long term disabilities in children. The aim of our study was to compare effectiveness of human growth hormone (HGH) among two groups of patients with JIA, one treated with HGH and the other not treated.
Methods: The study design employed a pre-test and post-test design with an untreated control group (non-randomized). Thirty six pre pubertal patients were equally allocated in two groups of intervention and control. They were followed in subspecialty rheumatologic clinic of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran, Iran for one year. We compared them based on height growth velocity (HGV) and height standard deviation score (HSDS). Independent t-tests were performed for analyzing the data. Alpha considered lower than 5%.
Results: The patients’ mean (standard deviation) of age was 10.84(2.26). Twelve of them were girls and six of them were boys in each group. HGV was 5.56±2 in intervention group and it was 2.26±1.97 in control group (p value <0.001). The mean discrepancy of HSDS was 0.08±0.46 in intervention group and it was – 0.65± 0.69 in control group (p value < 0.001).
Conclusion: Considering HGV and HSDS, HGH is an effective treatment and it can be recommended to patients with JIA. Longer duration of follow up and larger sample size are suggested for future studies.

The congress had many ideas not only for rheumatologists but also for orthopedicians, pediatricians, radiologists and even general pracctitioners.
