Rheumatology Research Center, Shariati Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran
Background:
Pattern of the joint involvement in osteoarthritis (OA) can be affected by the individual’s life style and occupation. In the present study, we detected the prevalence of hand osteoarthritis (HOA) in Iranian dentists who worked in Tehran. In addition, characteristics of the OA were determined.
Materials and Methods:
The study population consisted of the Iranian dentists who had attended in The Annual Scientific Dental Congress in Tehran. Four hundred participants of Tehran were questioned by a self answering questionnaire. After filling the questionnaire, the dentists were examined by a rheumatologist. Then in the (HOA) cases, X-ray of hands was done.
Results:
The response rate was 90% in this study. The mean age of respondent was 43.5 + 8.8 and the mean Body Mass Index was 25.5 + 3.4. Among respondent 27 cases suffered from OA (6.8% CI: 4.5-9.7). The prevalence of hand OA was 18 from 291 among men, and 9 from 109 among women, 6.2% and 8.3 respectively. The most involved joints were the first Carpometacarpal (CMC I), Distal Interphalangeal (DIP) and Proximal Interphalangeal (PIP) joints. The only significant risk factor for HOA was family history, OR: 2.8 CI: 1.23 – 6.37.
Conclusion:
The prevalence of HOA was higher in dentists in comparison to Iranian normal population (2.9% HOA in normal population according to the COPCORD study, 2008). The prevalence of the disease was higher in Iranian dentists in comparison to some other countries. In this study the differences were due to the family history and the long working hours of Iranian dentists.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : No, thanks for your concern. We took part the congress as a member of Iranian Rheumatology Association(IRA). IRA is the official organization to contact with Asian Pacific League of Association for Rheumatology (APLAR). It is responsible to manage the follow up actions, talks and collaborations. We can invite the other members of APLAR in annual congress of Rheumatology that is held by IRA.

Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Unfortunately the Iranian team experienced a very complicated and difficult process, regarding the limitation to benefit from an international reliable bank account (credit card ).
To buy the flight tickets we had to deal with a foreign office that charged us more expensive than real price. To pay for booking the hotel and registration the congress we had the same problem. I personally have some relatives in the European countries so I asked them to pay these fees. I don't have any idea that how the others deal with this process.

Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The APLAR Symposium 2013 was organized in conjunction with second Indonesia – Japan Rheumatology forum. The program was successfully held from August 29th – September 1st. Close to 1,300 participants from 54 countries including delegates, faculty members, exhibitors, sponsors, and members of the press attended the symposium.
The conference featured plenary lectures, symposia, USG and review courses, oral presentations and poster presentations with over 50 faculty members.
The symposium abstracts published as an Online Supplement of the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases.
Onsite delegate registration fees were 500 US Dollars. It included Admission to scientific sessions, conference materials, opening Ceremony and lunch and coffee breaks.
My research abstract, under the title of “Prevalence of hand osteoarthritis in dentists in Tehran, Iran” was presented as poster. We showed that the prevalence of HOA was higher in dentists in comparison to Iranian normal population according to COPCORD study. The dimensions of the poster were 90 cm. wide x 120cm. high. The poster was prepared on one sheet. The title and authors as stated on the submitted abstract were allocated on the top of the poster. The text, illustrations, etcwere bold enough to be read from a distance of two meters.
I was attended in poster session personally and answered to the participants’ questions and took part in related discussion
