Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : 9th joint meeting of paediatric endocrinology
Title of your Abstract : body image of normal, overweight and obese adolescent girls
country : milan italy
From : Thursday, September 19, 2013
To : Sunday, September 22, 2013
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Introduction: In each community, the social and cultural background influences the perception of body image and ideal size. However, the media convey a body ideal that is thinner than ever at a time when our young people are heavier than ever.
Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity, to figure out how normal, overweight and obese adolescents think of themselves and how many of them intend to go on a slimming diet or already are on a diet.
Method: During a multistage stratified cluster sampling, 20 secondary schools (6th to 11th grades) were selected from different zones in Tehran and 1700 females aged 11-17 years were assessed.
Results: The overall mean prevalence of overweight and obesity were 14.7 and 6.45 in girls.
24% of normal students considered themselves as fat, 52% as balanced and 24% as thin. For the overweight students, 78.9% considered themselves as fat, 19.1% as balanced and 2% as thin! And finally for the obese students, 89% considered themselves as fat, 10.1% as balanced, and 0.9% as thin (P<0.05).
94.5% of obese students were planning to go on a diet. This number fell to 85.8% for overweight students. Surprisingly 42.5% of normal students were planning to diet as well.
Conclusion: In this study, acceptance of body size was somehow realistic among overweight and obese adolescents, while one third of normal students considered themselves as “fat”. Similar to the researches done before, in our study, girls demonstrated an exaggerated preoccupation with body image. Not only the overweight and obese girls, but also normal girls considered themselves too fat and reported that they were currently trying to lose weight. This emphasizes the importance of self image in adolescents and its effect on social behaviors.
This epidemic trend to go on a diet can harmfully affect the adolescents’ intake of macro- and micronutrients.

If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : I met prof. Chiarelli. He is one of the chair person of European society of pediatric endrocrinology that six years ago he confirmed me to be an ESPE member the email address ESPE@bioscientifica.com
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : No, there isn’t any problem that need to follow up it. Because every thing in my presentation was clear and I answered to the question very carefully. My poster presentation is hang up on time and after that I attended to listen the oral presentation if you want to follow up actions you can refer to abstract book of the congress.
Because I am an ESPE (European society pediatric endocrinology) member from 2007 until now every year in this meeting I must Judge about the abstract and vote about it that can be accepted or no. so I did not have any problem at this congress and from 2006 until now I participate in this scientific meeting.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : This a good travel for me as a participant that attend in this congress every year from 2006 until now. We get ticket from Turkish air line and obtain visa from Italian embassy in Tehran that process of visa is difficult for us but because there wasn’t not direct flight to Milan so at first we went to turkey and we had 3hr transit at the Turkish airport and then were went to Milan. Another thing is this travel, is become familiar with another scientific person from other countries and sharing their experience and we can hear about their experience face to face
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : Researchers from many countries presented their works in field of pediatric endocrinology which were very interesting and informative.
the congress gave us the opportunity to share our experiences regarding our problematic cases and issues.
it was very well organized ,Considering my own observations and outcomes of the congress, I can tell that it was a great and interesting experience for my academic major. The level of congress was advanced and many specialists and sub-specialists from all of European countries like Germany netherland, Sweiszerland, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Turkish, Prague, Astharia, Romania,United States of America, United Kingdom, Spain, many of the asian countries and canada, participated in it. The congress had many ideas not only for endocrinologist but also for pediatricians, and even general pracctitioners. Presenting e-posters had helped to some presenters to send their documents electronically without transferring hard copies of their posters.
