Background: Transplantation remains the main therapy for patients with end-stage renal diseases, but acute rejection of renal allografts still is a life-threatening complication that is associated with alterations in the expression levels of protein encoding genes. Accurate biomarkers could be a useful tools for prediction of acute rejection. Because miR-155 play important gene-regulatory roles in the expression of genes implicated in adaptive immunity, we investigated whether acute rejection associated with changes in miR-155 expression within peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and whether its expression levels could be predict acute rejection of renal allografts.
Materials and Methods: We surveyed expression levels of miR-155 in PBMCs from recipients with acute rejection (N=42) as well as subjects with normal biopsy results as controls (N=48). Levels of miR-155 were measured in subjects with AR as well as controls using TaqMan MicroRNA Assays that allow absolute quantification of miRNAs. Then we examined associations of miR-155 with acute rejection.
Results: In our study, expression levels of miR-155 was increased in PBMCs of the recipients with acute rejection compared with recipients with normal biopsy results. We found a significant association between expression of miR-155 and acute rejection. Moreover, acute rejection of renal allogtafts could be predicted with a high level of precision by measurement of miR-155 levels within PBMCs.
Conclusion: Measurement of miR-155 in PBMCs could be used as a biomarker for non-invasive diagnosis of acute rejection in renal transplant recipients. Also these findings may improve our understanding of acute rejection mechanism.

What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : Responses to my talking points were full of hope for discovery of good diagnostic and predictive biomarker of acute rejection of renal allografts. Because of our study was the first study that evaluated the expression levels of miR-155 in PBMCs samples of acute rejection patients and our results showed that acute rejection could be diagnosed with the assessments of this miRNA in blood of renal transplant patients, everybody were surprised and they told me congratulation. There were no specific questions or concerns.

Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Attending a congress in the Netherlands is expensive, especially when you live on another continent and thus have to travel really far. In the congress, accomodation was very easy. You can choose to either stay with a student, make use of the international Student Accommodation “The Housing Office” or stay at a hostel.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : ISCOMS – the International Student Congress of (bio)Medical Sciences – is one of the world’s leading student congresses in the (bio)medical sciences. Their scientific programme was included a variety of both professional researchers (keynote lectures) and student researchers (student sessions) from all over the world, presented to an international and professional audience. A pre-course for mastering research, hands-on workshops made ISCOMS an enervating experience! There was about 20 oral sessions spread out over two days. The sessions were divided into different categories to cover different topics and supervised by an experienced researcher in that field together with a student from the ISCOMS organisation. At the end of the session, the session chairs were announced the winner of the session. The Congress was a great experience where I learned many things.
