In order to verify the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in North and North West of Khuzestan Province, South Iran, the current study was undertook during 2011-2012. A total of 900 individuals, including 475 males and 425 females were selected by random systematic sampling, from rural, urban and nomad populations of all cities in that part of Khuzestan Province. Fresh stool samples were collected and examined for intestinal parasites by formalin ether concentration, nutrient agar culture and in case of diarrhea by direct smear, as well. In general, 16.4% were infected with intestinal parasites. The rate of infection with protozoa and helminth parasites were 13 % and 3.4 %, respectively. The infection rate for each parasite species is as follows: Giardia lamblia 5.2%, Entamoeba coli 3.7%, Blastocystis hominis 2.5%, Hymenolepis nana 1.1%, Trichostrongylus 1.1 % and Strongyloides stercoralis 1.2%.
The relationship among infectivity and sex, age, occupation, literacy level, place of residency, and family dimension were analyzed. The most prevalent species of protozoan parasites was G. lamblia (5.2%), with significantly higher prevalence in children less than 15 years old. No hookworm infection was found in the area, but S. stercoralis and Trichostrongylus spp. were found in the population. S. stercoralis was more prevalent in rural areas (2.9%), while Trichostrongylus spp. in nomad population (6.1%). Application of molecular tools for species determination of Trichostrongylus is recommended.
