Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : simulation in medical education conference (SIMEC) 2014
Title of your Abstract : Reliability and validation of communication and counseling skills’ tool for assessing pharmacy students using of standardized patient
country : turkey

Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Introduction: Friendly communication skills in confronting the clients and patients lead to enhancement of performance and confirmation of the patients. The present research was conducted with purpose of proposing the evaluation tools of communication skills within pharmacology students and also determination of volubility and reliability of that focusing on the standardized patient (SP).
Methods: This is a demonstrative-analytical research. Through the first phase of the research, the evaluation tools were proposed by a comprehensive review of the resources, then content validity of the evaluation tools were examined by 6 experts within two Delphi rounds. Reliability of the tools was calculated by Cronbach's alpha. Moreover, performance validity and reliability of the standardized patients were determined based on comparison their grades and average grades of the evaluators and also conducting test-retest.
Results: The resulted 0.72 checklist from Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was in an acceptable range of repeatability. The average grade of the evaluators as “gold standard” was applied for reliability evaluation of the standardized patients. Furthermore, performance of each SP was compared by this average based on intraclass correlation coefficient analysis. The correlation coefficient for the first SP was reported equal to 0.77 and p=0.01. This coefficient was 0.64 for the second SP; lower than the acceptable range. The coefficients for the third and the forth SP were 0.77 and 0.85, respectively. Kappa analysis method was applied, aiming to description of adaptation rate among grades of the evaluators for each question at the check list. The Kappa adaptation rate among grades of the evaluators was 0.75.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the research it can be indicated that applying the standardized patients for evaluation of performance by the pharmacology students in case of communication skills shows a high significant validity and reliability.

Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : ASPE,SESAM
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : According to the litrature, Pharmacist-patient communication around prescription medications can optimize treatment
outcomes. Society’s expectations of pharmacist-patient communication around medications can be
expressed in legislation, economic incentives, and authority control.thus, we need another studies to fullfill the gap of knowledge about tihs matter.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : There is no need for following up actions, but it seems to be necessary that we improve our competencies in communication skills training and attention to all aspect of these skills.
According to our cultural diversities in our country we need to attention to some elements such as language barrier. Because of Foreign-language (FL) patients are at increased risk for adverse drug events.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : there some problem according to our limitation for paying the fees.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : SIMEC 2014 was conducted about IPE and using simulation in medical education. According to the literature, Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important step in advancing health professional education for many years and has been endorsed by the Institute of Medicine as a mechanism to improve the overall quality of health care.
In the other hands, Simulation-based learning provided students with interprofessional activities they saw as relevant for their future as practitioners.
They embraced both the interprofessional and simulation components enthusiastically.
As we know, Interprofessional education through simulation offers a promising approach to preparing future healthcare professionals for the collaborative models of healthcare delivery being developed internationally.
