Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : Asian Congress of Nutrition 2015
Title of your Abstract : Effectiveness of vitamin D-fortified yogurt drink on glycemic status and endothelial biomarkers in subjects with type 2 diabetes

Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Objective: In this study, the effects of improvement of vitamin D status on glycemic status, lipid profile and endothelial biomarkers in T2D subjects were investigated. METHODS: Subjects with T2D were randomly allocated to one of the two groups to receive either plain yogurt drink (PYD; containing 170 mg calcium and no vitamin D/250 mL, n1 = 50) or vitamin D3-fortified yogurt drink (FYD; containing 170 mg calcium and 500 IU/250 mL, n2 = 50) twice a day for 12 weeks. RESULTS: The intervention resulted in a significant improvement in fasting glucose, the Quantitative Insulin Check Index (QUICKI), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), triacylglycerols, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), endothelin-1, E-selectin and MMP-9 in FYD compared to PYD (P < 0.05, for all). Interestingly, difference in changes of endothelin-1, E-selectin and MMP-9 concentrations in FYD compared to PYD (-0.35 ± 0.63 versus -0.03 ± 0.55, P = 0.028; -3.8 ± 7.3 versus 0.95 ± 8.3, P = 0.003 and -2.3 ± 3.7 versus 0.44 ± 7.1 ng/mL, respectively, P < 0.05 for all), even after controlling for changes of QUICKI, FM and waist circumference, remained significant for endothelin-1 and MMP-9 (P = 0.009 and P = 0.005, respectively) but disappeared for E-selectin (P = 0.092). CONCLUSIONS: The major finding of the present study is that ameliorated vitamin D status is accompanied by improved glycemic status, lipid profile and endothelial biomarkers in T2D subjects. Our findings suggest both direct and indirect ameliorating effects of vitamin D on the endothelial biomarkers.

How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : More than 4000
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Malaysia, China, Korea, USA, Ireland, Netherlands, England, France
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : IUNS
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : It was interesting for audience and asked a number of good questions regarding the follow up of the study and future studies with Vitamin D in glycemic control and cardiovascular disease
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : Jeffrey M. Friedmanm; Rockefeller University
Michael Fenech; CSIRO Food and Nutrition, Australia
Marika Nomura; Harvard School of Public Health, USA
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : No, I don't think that there is a need for follow up actions with the members of the congress. I met many researchers and made friend with them and with some of them I am in touch. But if you would like, Dr Katerin Gussler was the head of IUNS from England. She may help us to help us to hold the 2nd congress of nutrition because we need international support for nutrition congress.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : No problem
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : - I had the chance to attend all the sessions.
- My oral presentation was very welcomed by the audiences.
- Reviewing the posters with other reviewers in the poster session was one of goals.
-I as the scientific committee of the meeting had the chance to talk with the representatives of the other countries to depict an outline for further collaborations.
- I had another chance to be familiar with their executive committee to know about conducting the ACN congress as an experience for holding Nutrition congress
