Title of the Congress : the 92nd General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR)
Title of your Abstract : A modified quality assessment tool for evaluating cross-sectional studies
Destination Country :
From : Monday, June 23, 2014
To : Sunday, June 29, 2014
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Objective: To assess oral diseases in the population, few countries have national and sub-national scheduled surveillance system. There is no consolidated tool for qualifying prevalence studies assessing oral diseases locally in a country. The aim of present study was to provide and examine a comprehensive tool for assessing the quality of papers reporting cross-sectional studies for inclusion in a systematic review and Meta-Analysis.
Method: STROBE statement checklist items for reporting cross-sectional studies used as a base. Other variables were added following critical appraisal of different cross-sectional studies reporting prevalence point estimates of six of oral diseases with remarkable burden (dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss, oral cancer, TMJ disorders and cleft lip and palate).
Result: Eighteen items of STROBE were selected and included, then combined and eleven new variables defined. Seven other variables defined and added to the tool. Totally, seventeen comprehensive variables for quality assessment of a cross-sectional study were selected. 1. study scope, 2.study level, 3.study type, 4.power of study, 5.sampling method, 6.sample size, 7.sample weight, 8.periods of subjects recruitment, 9.subject eligibility criteria, 10.practical outcome and disease definition, 11.disease exploration, 12.participant characteristics, 13.intra-observer reliability, 14.inter-observer reliability, 15.examiner level, 16.number of examiners, 17.quality of statistical analysis. Face validity and content validity of the variables were evaluated by three researchers, separately, and in focus group discussion. Reliability of the variables was assessed by evaluating ten articles and a high level of agreement obtained.
Conclusion: To map the prevalence of oral diseases in a country, a quality assessment tool for evaluating separate epidemiological studies is an essential component.
