Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : According to worldwide demographic changes to more elderly people, meeting the geriatric population’s oral health needs raise important issues in dental education. Maintaining and improving oral health of older adults are great challenges for all societies. Future dentists should have enough competencies to provide more complex oral care services for this group. Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a short course about geriatrics, on knowledge, attitudes and self-reported practice of senior dental students in Tehran. Methods: The interventional study was conducted in Tehran’s two main dental schools, in 2013-2014. In total, 112 senior dental students consecutively attended the study and completed a questionnaire on a range of topics including their background, knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported practice before and after the course. The course was designed as three sessions, consisting of lectures, group discussion, and participation in community-based service (field learning). Students of Tehran dental school served as the intervention group (n=62, response rate: 91%) and the remaining students who did not undertake the course (n=50) formed the control group. Data were analyzed by means of SPSS-21 and ANOVA, Linear regression and t-tests were performed. Tehran University of Medical Sciences ethics committee approved the study. Results: Of the participants, 69 (61.6%) were female and 43 (38.4%) male. The mean age was 24.8 (range 22-40 years, SD 2.1). The mean score acquired about the “general knowledge regarding geriatrics” was 73.5 and 86.1 in the pre-test which changed to 91.7 and 87.6 after the course in the intervention and control groups respectively (p<0.05). No significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding attitudes after the intervention. The difference in the practice was significant after the course among the two groups (p< 0.05). Regression analyses revealed no relation between knowledge, attitude and background factors; however self-reported practice was better in girls (p<0.05). Conclusions: After a short course on geriatric oral health, knowledge and performance of senior dental students were improved, while it did not influenced their attitudes. It seems short-term geriatric training can be effective, however, for changing attitudes towards geriatric oral health care designing long term courses may be necessary.
