Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : The effect of bilateral sub-thalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on prosody of speech of Parkinson’s disease


Objectives
The golden standard method to improve motor function of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is bilateral sub-thalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS), but its effect on speech is still questionable. To investigate impact of this approach on both main part of prosody (perception and expression) of Farsi speaking PD.


Methods
Thirteen PD (6 females) with 14.53±3.23 years of duration of disease and 4±3.39 years after surgery, and 8 normal control group evaluated. Severity of PD assessed by Unified Parkinson`s Disease Rating Scale part-III (UPDRS-III) and Persian Profiling Elements of Prosody in Speech-Communication (PPEPS-C) used to survey all part of perception and expression of prosody (affect, focus, chunking,…). All of evaluation were done in the "on" state of medication and stimulation.

Results
No significant difference observed between prosody of patients and control. No correlation seen between severity and duration of disease with prosody (total score and all prosody subscales). There was positive relation between expression and perception of prosody in PD (p=0.000) and all of prosody subscales except affect and turn-end. 

Conclusions
It seems that bilateral STN-DBS may improve prosody in PD patients. Prosody of speech influenced by linguistic factors and different motor control system from other motor performance

What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : Our study was unique and interesting because of the first study of speech prosody of Farsi speaking patients after DBS surgery. The chairman of my presentation session" Dr. Martinez" asked me about my work and speech prosody of patients and the best way for assessment. He was convinced that speech pathologist need for better and comprehensive evaluation of speech and language disorders in Parkinson and motor disabilities are different and apart from speech performance.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : I follow up this congress and its scientific program for future plans, but I think that more and closer relationship with main movement disorders clinics and famous scientists of movement disorders such as pr. Hallet and Jankovic need for better researches in Iran. they have very equipped clinics and labs and speech therapists collaborators.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : I went to Milan directly by Mahan airlines and satisfied from the ticket price and hospitality.
I was in a residency (not hotel) for a week and paid 60 euro for every night.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : It was a very interesting experience for me. I saw many authors and famous professors of movement disorders that everyone have many articles and books about motor disorders. Their presentations and studies were very comprehensive. They reported their patients by detailed assessment and used many kind of evaluation tasks and tools such as FMRI, PETSCAN. Genetic, electrophysiological and cognitive evaluations used in their studies. Speech and language disorders of patients with Parkinson’s disease and other motor/ movement disorders are very interesting for them and few studies done in these field
