Abstract
Background: The role of a neonatal nurse is crucial for an appropriate and successful execution of developmental care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the nurses’ opinions on the barriers to effective implementation of developmental care in NICUs of several educating hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2013.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out on a total of 138 nurses who had a minimum work experience of six months in NICUs. Data collecting tool was a 12-point questionnaire including the questions related to 5 core measures of developmental care according to the Coughlin’s framework as well as the questions associated with the barriers based on the study by Wu. Data were analyzed with SPSS 20 using descriptive statistics for Mann-Whitney test.
Findings: The majority of participants described that inadequate time, inappropriate work environment in terms of space and equipment of NICU, too many requests by parents, routine care practice, high cost, lack of knowledge over the effect of developmental care, absence of guideline and efficient collaboration with other members of therapy team, lack of sufficient experience related with neonatal care, and inadequate skill in communicating with parents were the major barrier to successful delivery of developmental care in the NICUs. Statistically, the Mann-Whitney test revealed a significant difference between the nurses with work experience less than 3 years (32/49.23%) and those with an experience over 3 years (47/64.39%; p=0.042) regarding the lack of appropriate NICU environmental components including space and equipment. Also, there was a significant difference in the absence of efficient collaboration with other members of healthcare team between the nurses with work experience of less than 3 years (33/38.35%) and those with experience over 3 years (40/54.8%; p<0.004).
Conclusion: Based on our findings, the implementation of five core measures of developmental care was hampered by serious barriers.

What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : Yes. My research was about Nurses’ opinions on the barriers to effective implementation of developmental care in neonatal intensive care units of several educating hospitals in Tehran (Iran), they asked how we improved our NICU personal?
I answered them, our ministry of health held a special workshop by Dr ALS that she invited from USA for nurses and neonatal physician with together. This work shop has changed our attitude and our mission.

Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : There are not any follow up actions for talking with the members of the congress because this International Conference was on “Multidisciplinary Trends in Academic Research” and all the presenter had a few minutes for describing their results and their conclusion but if there were any need following actions I will inform you.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Processes providing ticket, an accommodation about the travel was very hard for a faculty member that must spend a lot of time. Moreover we haven’t any guide how can do all things easily.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : This conference was very interesting because all Participants come from different countries and with different field that they presented their article. In this conference I understand about the others ways to do variety of research about children and neonatal disease and also how to manage these wards. I became familiar with new technology in engineering and mathematics and management and new drugs and about the new result in my field especially about how we can to prevent HIV virus and AIDS disease to neonate with many ways in labor room even about communication of human being.
