1.Brief summary of Leave : I have started my sabbatical period in the McGill University, Royal Victoria Hospital, first of September 2014. In the first week I do not have any academic activity. Since the second week I have participated in some theoretical courses and some workshops related to Biosafety and lab. Animals. For other 4 months I have worked in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology, such as Media preparation, Sperm preparation, In Vitro Fertilization, In Vitro Maturation, Iintra Cytoplasmic Sperm Iinjection, Cryopreservation with cryo loop (Vitrification) and so on… in research lab. and McGill human reproductive center in Roya Victoria Hospital. Also, meanwhile I have participated in all of the lab. seminars as a lab. member and I have presented three lectures in Teruko Taketo’s lab.
2.List the objectives of your sabbatical leave as listed in your proposal and indicate how completely they were met : To be familiar with Assisted Reproductive Technology and Researchs, such as Sperm preparation, IVF, IVM, ICSI, Cryopreservation (Vitrification) and so on…in an advance University and research center .
3.Acheivements(Publications,research,et.al.) : Until now no publication.
But, as you know the McGill is a top ranked University in the world. So, participation in their research and lab. activities is a good opportunity to be familiar with new research idea and points.
4.Assessment of Value of Sabbatical leave(benefits, faculty development, future professional activities,...) : It was excellent opportunity to me to be familiar with new laboratory and clinical methods in animal and human Assisted Reproduction Technology. In addition to laboratory works, I have participated in McGill Andrology, Obstetrics and Gynecology seminars and obtained some idea in urology, gynecology and ART fields. As you know the McGill University is a top ranked University in the world. So, participation in their research and lab activities is a good opportunity to be familiar with new research idea and points. They have some mandatory standards in laboratory animal’s activity in their research lab. For example without Biosafety, Biohazard and animal care committee certificate, you do not have permission to enter to research lab and animal house and work with animals. Some course which should I have passed are as mentioned below:
Mouse CO2 Euthanasia, Mouse Cardiac Puncture, Mouse Cervical Dislocation, Euthanasia with Anesthesia, Mouse Handling and Restraint, Mouse Intraperitoneal Injections, Mouse Saphenous Blood Collection, Mouse Subcutaneous Injections. These courses and workshops are mandatory to all of new academic faculty members in McGill University. In order to pass these courses one must obtain 80% of score. Also, in human lab activity, the role of work significantly different with Iran. For example, they do not use ordinary incubator for oocyte and embryo culture because of contamination. They use a new type of standard incubator by the name of Bench top, in human clinical embryology lab. In this type of incubator you can keep only for dishes separately. So, the contamination level, temperature and CO2 level will be on control directly. Also, for oocyte or embryo manipulation and follicle dissection they do not use mouth pipets. Because, they believed that, it may produce some contamination to lab. media and perhaps make some illness to embryologist. Unfortunately, in Iran most of clinical embryologist use mouth pipets for oocyte and embryo manipulation.
About the research activity and data they were completely sensitive and research standards were very important for them. For example, one of the research activity that I have done in the Taketo’s lab was comparison of ovulation induction and COCs collection, In vitro maturation of Germinal Vesicle oocyte, Vitrification and Warming, evaluation the range of in vitro fertilization, cleavage rate and blastocyst formation in two groups of animals (Young and old female mice). But, because of the time of experiments which were not simultaneous, the supervisor of the lab did not allow to publish any paper from this work. She believed that in various time of experiments, many factors such as time of sample manipulation, media preparation and quality, environment, temperature and so on…may effect on research data and results. However, there are significant differences in research and clinical activity within our works and McGill universities standards in comparison. So, it is necessary for us (Tehran University of Medical Sciences research labs) to work hardly and get new perspective to achieve high ranked universities levels in the world.
