Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : 29th annual congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine
Title of your Abstract : Factors Influencing the Pattern and Intensity of Myocardial FDG Uptake in Oncologic PET-CT Imaging
Destination Country : Spain
From : Saturday, October 15, 2016
To : Wednesday, October 19, 2016
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Introduction: Myocardial FDG uptake is highly variable, ranging from quite intense to minimal distribution, in oncologic whole body FDG PET/CT studies. Intense or heterogeneous myocardial FDG uptake is undesirable as it may interfere with the visual or quantitative evaluation of tumoral invasion and metastases in pericardium, myocardium or adjacent mediastinal structures. The diet, as well as many other factors, is assumed to influence the myocardial FDG uptake. Using a multivariate model, we tried to identify and predict the main factors influencing cardiac FDG uptake in patients referred for oncologic PET/CT evaluation.
Methods: A total of 214 patients referred for oncologic FDG PET/CT scan were enrolled in our study. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups according to the diet they were instructed to follow during 24-hour period before imaging. One hundred and seven cases with a routine diet (RD) and the same number of patients with a low carbohydrate high fat (LCHF) diet were included. All patients in both groups were also instructed to fast 6 hours before imaging. Weight, height, blood glucose, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured before radiotracer injection. Visual and quantitative analysis were done after imaging and the pattern of FDG uptake as well as standardized quantitative value of cardiac uptake was determined for each case.
Results: The frequency of undesirable cardiac FDG uptake in the LCHF group was significantly less than RD group (17% vs. 72%, p<0.001). The univariate analyses showed male gender, BMI>=30 as well as consumption of cardiochemotoxic agents, benzodiazepines and β blockers were significantly associated with higher intensity of myocardial FDG uptake, while this undesirable finding was less evident in cases with diabetes mellitus. A multivariate logistic regression model including all of the mentioned variables revealed the diet was the only significant independent factor that predicted undesirable myocardial FDG uptake (p<0.001).
Conclusion: LCHF diet 24 hours before PET/CT imaging is the only controllable independent factor influencing the intensity and pattern of myocardial FDG uptake and is recommended as an optimal preparation to suppress cardiac FDG uptake.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : More than 6300 participants
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Most of the countries all over the world including Spain, Germany, Italy, Turkey, USA, UK, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Greece, France, Netherlands, China, India, Austria, Australia, Denmark, Finland ......
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : IAEA, WFNMB, SNM, AOFNMB
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : I presented my research work as an electronic poster at this congress and the audience showed their interests on the presented topics.
To acknowledge the high scientific value the Scientific Programme Committee of the congress has decided to initiate for
following tracks/topics: M2M/Do.MoRe/Clinical Oncology a new feature – the so called e-posters. All
accepted papers of these 3 topics/tracks have presented as electronic posters (instead of paper posters) in the “e-Poster Area”. In this area participants found numerous computers to view the e-poster sessions alone or in small groups throughout the entire duration of the congress.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : Mohammad Eftekhari, Saeed Farzanefar, Davood Beiki and Armaghan Fard-Esfahani form Tehran University of Medical Sciences
Vahid Dabbagh from Mashhad University of Medical Sciences
Majid Assadi from Bushehr University of Medical Sciences
Proff. Vinjamuri from UK
Dr. Beheshti from Vienna
...
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : The EANM organizes an annual Congress, as one of the largest nuclear medicine meetings world-wide. The current EANM Congress was held in Barcellona, Spain, and received
more than 6300 attendees with more than 1700 submitted abstracts. The diversity of participating
countries (65 countries) and participation of scientists and experts in the field of nuclear
medicine was given a good credibility to the Congress. In addition, several scientific programs at the meeting were presented such as Plenary Sessions, Symposia, Continuing
Medical Educations, Categorical Seminars, and World Summits. I very much hope that the trend towards global participation and interaction will continue to develop at EANM-2017 in Vienna.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : The travel expences are too much and the faculty, if possible, should put greater effort to cover the expenses.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : Congress committees put great effort into providing us with state-of-the-art Continuous Medical Education sessions, enhanced by interactive sessions. There was a long list of guest speakers who had lecture in the multidisciplinary joint symposia where the
committees provided an insight into the collaborations they have established outside of nuclear medicine. The latest achievements in clinical nuclear medicine, science and technology presented and discussed during oral and poster sessions. In addition, several scientific programs at the meeting were presented such as Plenary Sessions, Symposia, Continuing Medical Educations, Categorical Seminars, and World Summits. At the end of the meeting, the tradition of summarizing the meeting highlights in order to provide us with a broad overview of the science presented at the congress.
