Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : 11th Scientific and Annual Meeting of the European Society of Coloproctology
Title of your Abstract : Risk factor affecting wound complications and recurrence after excision of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease
Destination Country : Italy
From : Wednesday, September 28, 2016
To : Friday, September 30, 2016
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Aim: Excision with Healing by Secondary Intention (EHSI) is one of the most popular and widely used surgical procedures for Sacrococcygeal Pilonidal Disease (SPD). This study describes risk factors leading to the development of various postoperative complications and recurrence after this procedure.
Method: In this prospective analytic cohort study, 177 patients with SPD who underwent EHSI procedure were included. Clinical presentation, past medical/surgical history, pilonidal disease’s characteristics, and excised ellipse’s characteristics were measured as possible risk factors. Post-operative complications and recurrence were recorded as outcomes.
Results: A total of 177 (129 males, 48 females) patients underwent EHSI with a mean age of 25.58±7.9 years. Twenty patients (11.3%) had a history of previous surgery for their SPD (including EHSI or flap procedures). The discharge was the most common presenting symptom detected in 132(74.5%) patients. Mean length, width, and weight of the excised ellipses were 5.64±8.04cm, 2.94±8cm, and 29.56±36.01gr, respectively. Analysis detected significant relations (p-value<0.05) between the type of previous SPD treatment and recurrence(n=16) or postoperative complications including delayed wound healing(n=47) and bleeding(n=3).
Conclusion: Patients with a history of previous pilonidal surgery are prone to the development of future recurrence or delayed wound healing after the EHSI procedure.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : More than 500 volunteers
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : From all over the world mostly European countries including England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden and ...
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box :
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : My presented poster was interesting for scientists working in the field of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease. Large sample size and the study design were the main advantages of my presented study. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were the main points of concern and I tried to explain it to the attended audience. More explanation on the statistical analysis was also done.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : N/A
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : No follow up is needed from the university. Faculty members should be encouraged to attend scientific meetings related to their field of practice. I believe that great research projects are designing and running in our country and in such international meetings out faculty members can present their valuable work to other scientist from all over the world.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : No Problem.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : It was one of the most important and greatest congresses and meetings in the field of colorectal diseases in the world. It was very informative to me and provide me the chance to learn more on this topic. I learned a great deal about the new topics and debates in the field of coloproctology. Informative video sessions explaining surgical procedures, including open and laparoscopic, were presented to the audience. Sessions on colorectal cancer update, anal fistula, surgical treatment for irritable bowel disease, anastomotic leakage was among other interesting topics. I believe that attending these meetings will greatly help the faculty members to remain up to date in their scientific fields.
